이순신에 대한 세계인의 인식

국문 초록

본고는 외국에서 이순신을 어떻게 연구하고 인식하고 있는지를 한눈에 볼 수 있도록 하겠다는 목적을 갖고 있다. 본고에서는 세계인을 중국인, 일본인, 서양인 3개 집단으로 분류하려 한다. 중국인은 임진왜란 때 조선을 위해 군대를 파병했으며, 조ㆍ명 연합군을 결성하여 싸운 적이 있는 참전국 국민이다. 일본인은 조선을 침략하여 전쟁을 일으킨 침략국의 국민이다. 서양인은 제3국들의 국민이다. 또한 연구 대상으로 삼은 외국 자료는 2010년까지 나타난 것 중 필자가 모은 약 68점이다. 그중에서 중국 자료는 16점, 일본 자료는 24점, 서양 자료는 28점(미국 16, 영국 9, 호주 1, 스웨덴 1, 캐나다 1)이다. 중국에서는 이순신을 주제로 한 논문이나 저술은 아주 적어 찾아보기 어렵고, 임진왜란을 논하는 과정에서 이순신을 간략하게 언급하는 것이 대부분이다. 일본에서는 조선과 중국의 침략과 정복 노력을 다시 실패 하지 않겠다는 19세기 말-20세기 전반의 목적이나 한ㆍ일 간의 우호관계 형성을 위한 현대적인 목적에서 이순신을 연구하였다. 서양에서는 일본의 침략과 정복 시도가 실패한 원인을 군사나 전사의 측면에서 규명하려는 학술적 목적으로 이순신을 연구하였다. 이순신에 대한 평가는 군신(軍神)이나 전신(戰神)처럼 신과 같은 인물, 인류의 사표나 지도자, 세계사나 동양사의 최고위인, 한국의 구세주나 영웅, 세계사의 영웅들과의 비교할 수 있는 인물로 구분될 수 있다. 세계인들이 이순신을 이렇게 평가하는 이유는 8가지이다. 1) 이순신이 조선과 일본 그리고 중국의 동아시아 3국의 운명에 영향을 주었다. 2) 수군을 이용한 해전의 승리로 지상전은 물론 임진왜란 자체의 승패까지 좌우하고 결정지을 정도로 큰 영향을 주었다. 3) 해양전략 개념의 근대적인 요소들이 이순신에게서 나타나며, 그 전략이 지상군의 전투와 전쟁까지도 좌우하였다. 4) 이순신이 근대적인 전술을 사용했다. 5) 이순신은 고매한 인격, 용감성, 애국심 그리고 희생정신을 보유하고 있었다. 6) 이순신은 전문지식, 지휘통솔력, 정치외교력을 겸비하였다. 7) 과학기술의 재능까지 보유하여 당시 세계에서 최첨단 함정을 건조하고 실전에 참여시켰다. 8) 거북선은 획기적인 함정이었다. 이를 종합하면, 무관과 문관에게 필요한 심성, 자질, 능력은 물론 과학기술자의 능력까지 갖고서 전쟁과 역사까지 좌우할 정도로 큰 영향을 준 공을 세웠기 때문에 외국 자료에서 이순신이 높이 평가되고 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to see at a glance how foreigners have studied and understood Yi Sun-Sin. I tried to divide foreigners into three groups. 1) Chinese : they dispatched troops to Korea during the Imjinwaeran. 2) Japanese : they invaded Korea. 3) Westerners : the third countries’ peoples. I used 68 foreign research materials that appeared until 2010. The materials are composed of 16 Chinese’, 24 Japanese’ and 28 Westerners’(16 American, 9 British, 1 Australian, 1 Swedish, 1 Canadian). It is difficult to find articles and works on Admiral Yi in China. Instead they tend to touch briefly on him somewhere along the researches on the Imjinwaeran. Japanese studied him not to fail again their invasion effort of Korea or China during the 19th and 20th centuries and now they study him establish friendly relations between Korea and Japan. Westerners have studied him for the purpose of investigating why Japanese invasion efforts failed in the military side. In other words, they have studied him academically. Foreigner evaluated him as a god of war, a guiding star or a leader of mankind, the greatest hero of the world history, a lifesaver of Koreans and a Korean hero able to be compared with world heroes. The reason is : 1) His activities affected the fate of 3 nations(Korea, Japan, China). ; 2) Victories by his fleet in the sea-battles make great influence on war itself and Japanese ground forces. ; 3) Modern maritime strategical elements appeared in his strategy, and the strategy greatly influenced on the activities of ground forces and result of the war. ; 4) His tactics were very modern, far ahead of the times. ; 5) He was a man of noble character, courageousness, patriotism and loyalty and self-sacrificing spirit. ; 6) He had expertise, leadership, political diplomacy and liberal arts. ; 7) He built the geobukseon(Turtle-ship) being based on his knowledge of science and technology, and engaged in naval warfares. ; 8) Geobukseon is an innovative vessel in the history of warship. He made a significant contribution to determine the outcome of war and even history. He had not only mentality, talents and abilities necessary to the civilian and military officials but also the scientific technician s ability.
