전투사 연구의 발달을 위한 제언: 클리오의 기초적 마르스 읽기

국문 초록

이 연구는 군사사 연구의 기초를 형성하는 전투사 연구를 촉진하기 위하여 전투사 연구가 자리 잡지 못한 원인을 분석하고 그 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 한국 사회에는 그동안 신군사사 연구 경향이 꾸준하게 소개되어 왔으나 기대와 달리 군사사 연구가 궤도에 오르지 못하였으며 그 주요한 원인은 6.25전쟁을 치렀음에도 전투사를 연구할 수 있는 사료의 공개가 제한 되어 왔으며 전투사 연구를 위한 뚜렷한 동기가 존재할 수 없었으며 전투사를 기술할 수 있는 적절한 서술 방식이 개발되어 있지 않았기 때문이다. 본 연구는 전투사의 발전을 위하여 전투사 서술 방식을 정립할 것을 제안한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 역사학의 일반적 연구 방법인 내러티브 형성을 전투사 서술의 골격으로 제안하고 여기에 전투라는 특유의 폭력행동을 재구성하기 위해 전술, 전략, 무기의 운용, 병력의 배치, 리더십 등의 전투를 구성하는 작전적요소를 군이 지니고 있는 교리에 따라 가미할 것을 제안한다. 그리고 여기에 세계적인 군사사 연구들이 전투를 설명할 때 사용하는 방법을 참고하여 적절하게 접목할 것을 권한다. 이를 통해 전투사 연구 방식이 정립될 수 있으며 이를 통해 민간 학자와 군 부 학자들이 객관적인 전투사 연구를 수행하게 될 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study explores ways to enhance battle histories in Korean academic society. In fact, a group of historians have introduced the trends of new military history but failed to bring the development of the military history. There are three main causes: negligence of revealing first hand materials recorded by combat units at that time, the lack of motivation to study battle history, and finally, the lack of proper ways to write battle history. As a result, this paper attempts to suggest ways to write battle historis. This paper argues that shaping narrative, like other history, should be main method to compose the structure of battle stories. Later, some specific factors of battles - tactics, strategy, using fire arms, movement of units, and leadership - should be added to re-construct battle history in terms of current military doctrine. In addition, great examples of battle histories of great military historians should be consulted. In this way, proper ways to write to battle histories will be established, and this will enable civilian and military historians study battles with confidence.
