식민지기 만주 경험 여성의 귀환과 정체성 전략

국문 초록

이 글은 식민지기 만주로 가족이주를 떠났던 여성들이 조선으로 귀환하면서 만주에서의 근대적 경험을 자원으로 치환해내고, 차별화된 정체성으로 선택함으로써 생존전략을 구성해내는 것에 관심을 둔다. 식민지기 조선인으로서 만주로 떠날 수밖에 없었던 구조적인 요인에 관한 거시적 차원의 분석도 중요하겠지만, 이 글에서는 역사적으로 주조된 식민지 프레임 안에서 피식민 주체로서 경험한 근대를 재맥락화시키는 여성들의 삶을 미시적 차원에서 분석해보고자 한다. 항일 내셔널리즘에 결박당한 만주의 공백을 채우기 위한 방편으로서, 식민지기 만주를 일상의 경험으로 구성해온 행위 주체들의 삶에 주목해 볼 필요가 있다. 개별적 삶의 기억을 통해 식민지기의 경험이 해방과 압축적 경제성장기를 관통하면서 전략적 정체성으로 전환되는 과정에 대한 연구는 거대 담론과 미시 담론이 교차하는 지점을 확인해 본다는 의미가 있기도 하다. 연구 질문은 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 식민지라는 특수한 조건에서 구조적으로 유인된 이주민이었던 조선의 여성들은 만주에서 ‘근대’를 어떤 방식으로 경험하였는가? 둘째, 만주 ‘근대’를 경험한 여성들은 해방공간에서 조선으로 귀환한 이후 정착과 생존을 위한 전략으로서 차별화된 정체성을 어떻게 활용하였는가? 연구 질문에 대한 답을 구하기 위한 방법으로서 1918년과 1928년에 출생하 여 만주를 경험한 두 명의 여성 구술생애사 인터뷰자료를 선택하여 논의하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on how women, who had migrated to Manchuria with her family during Japanese colonial rule, turned their modern experience in Manchuria into resources and selected a distinctive identity as a survival strategy when they returned to Joseon. While it is important to examine the structural factors that forced these women to move to Manchuria as colonized Joseon people at a micro-level, the present article aims to analyze the lives of women who re-contextualized the modernity they experienced as colonized subjects in the historically shaped colonization framework at a micro-level. As a means to fill in the blanks in Manchuria bound by anti-Japanese nationalism, it is worth noting the lives of the subjects who had constituted Manchuria during the colonial period with daily life experiences. A study which examines memories about individual lives to see the way colonial experience transitioned into a strategic identity over the course of Korea’s liberation and rapid economic growth periods holds significance as it examines an intersection between macro-discourse and micro-discourse. There are two research questions. First, how did Joseon women, who were structurally induced to migrate under the special circumstance of colonization, experience ‘modernity’ in Manchuria? Second, how did the women who experienced ‘modernity’ in Manchuria use a distinctive identity as a strategy to settle and survive in a liberated country after they returned to Joseon? As a method to answer these questions, the present article selects and discusses the oral history interview materials of two women, who were born in 1918 and 1928, respectively, and experienced Manchuria.
