A New Look at Zhi Qian’s Translation of the Astadasasahasrika-prajnaparamita

국문 초록

지겸은 30년 이상 낙양과 건업을 중심으로 왕성한 활동을 펼친 역경가이다. 그는 텍스트의 번역뿐만 아니라 기존의 번역에 대한 교정 작업에도 참여했는데, 그가 다룬 문헌의 종류는 대승경전에서부터 자타카, 법구경에 이르기까지 매우 다양했다. 이렇게 광범위한 그의 작업에서 나타나는 다양한 용어들과 불규칙한 번역 방식은 그를 불교 역경사(譯經史)에서 가장 논쟁의 여지가 많은 역경가들 가운데 한 명으로 만들었다. 특히 『팔천송반야경( Astadasasahasrika-prajnaparamita)』의 번역인 『대명도경(大明度經, T225)』은 수많은 그의 작품들 가운데에서도 가장 주목받는 텍스트이다. 왜냐하면 『대명도경』의 일부에서 지겸의 다른 번역들과 상충되는 특징들이 발견되기 때문이다. 이에 랭카스터(Lancaster), 카라시마(Karashima), 나띠에르(Nattier)와 같은 현대 불교학자들은 이 문헌의 저자를 규명하기 위한 연구를 수행하여 대명도경의 첫 번째 장, 행품(行品)의 본문이 지겸의 번역이 아님을 주장했다. 이 논문에서는 기존 연구결과에 대한 간략한 설명과 함께, 그 연구방법론이 가지고 있는 문제점들을 검토해 보았다. 또한 『대명도경』과 『팔천송반야경』의 산스크리트본, 간다리본, 티벳본, 그리고 한문 이역본들에 비교를 통해 새로 발견한 이슈들을 정리하고, 향후 지겸의 번역에 대한 연구가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시해 보았다. 이 논문에서 도출한 결론은 다음과 같다. (1) 『대명도경』은 간다리본『팔천송반야경』과 가장 잘 부합한다. (2) 행간주석의 유무를 통해 『대명도경』을 T225A와 T225B로 구분하는 것은 문제의 소지가 있다. 행간주석이 아닌, 본문에 삽입된 형태의 주석이 양쪽 모두에서 발견되기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Zhī Qiān 支謙 (fl. 220-252 CE) is one of the most controversial translators in the history of early Chinese Buddhist translation because of the high degree of inconsistency and variability in his language and terminology. Among his works, the Dà míngdù jīng 大明 度經 (T225), which is the second Chinese translation of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Stanzas ( Aṣṭādaśasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā ), is the one which has attracted the most significant scholarly attention. This is because, when it comes to vocabulary and sentence style, the Dà míngdù jīng is clearly divided into two parts. Chapter 1, includes the interlinear commentary and the use of unusual vocabulary with an irregular prosodic style that appears not to be attributed to Zhī Qiān. The rest of the sūtra, Chapters 2-27, written in elegant four-character prosody without interlinear commentary, is considered to be Zhī Qiān’s genuine translation by modern Buddhist scholars, such as Lancaster, Karashima, and Nattier. This paper examines previous research on Zhī Qiān’s translations, and discusses issues found while reading this text in comparison with its Sanskrit, Gāndhārī, Tibetan and other Chinese versions. Focusing on the analysis of Zhī Qiān’s translation style and his terminology, this article argues that the relationship between the Dà míngdù jīng and other versions should be reconsidered in light of newly available sources like the Gāndhārī manuscript fragments. This article also asserts that the relationship between Chapter 1 and the rest of the sūtra needs to be reinvestigated on the grounds that there seems to be commentary in Chapter 2, even though it is not marked as the interlinear commentary in the Tripiṭaka Koreana and Taisho edition.
