국문 초록

이 연구는 트리니다드에서 식민지 독립의 쟁취와 함께 인종적 적대의 정치가 형성된 1936년부터 1966년까지 약 30년 동안을 역사적 배경으로 한다. 트리니다드는 이 시기를 통해서 아프리카계의 지지를 받는 〈민중민족운동〉이 집권당이 되고, 인도계를 주축으로 하는 〈민주노동당〉이 야당이 되는 정치 구도가 고착되게 되었다. 국제적으로 명성이 높았던 흑인 혁명가인 C. L. R. 제임스는 자신의 모국이 처한 이러한 인종적 대립의 정치 구도를 타파하기 위해서, 1966년에 〈노동자농민당〉의 창설을 주도하고 계급적 · 국민적 연대를 추진하였다. 이러한 정치적 전략은 ‘카리브 국민의 형성’에 대한 제임스 자신의 독특한 역사 인식과 함께, 아프리카계 석유산업 노동자들과 인도계 설탕산업 노동자들이 보여준 연대 투쟁의 역사적 경험을 기반으로 한 것이었다. 이 연구는 인종 갈등의 정치적 구도가 형성되는 과정을 통해서 망각되고 주변화 되어 왔던 트리니다드 인도계 노동자들의 투쟁과 그 정치적 상상력을 복원하고자 한다. 그리고 아프리카계와 인도계 노동자들의 연대를 추구했던 제임스의 정치적 기획을 크레올화 개념을 통해 접근하면서 그 개념이 가지는 이론적 가능성과 한계를 역사적으로 검토하려고 한다.

영문 초록

This study is designed to (re)inscribe the experiences of the East Indian migrant workers in the Caribbean history through the creolization model, thus to (re)imagine the area in various connections. The span of time it hopes to cover includes the period from 1936 to 1966 in (Post) Colonial Trinidad. During this period, Trinidad’s decolonization went hand in hand with establishing the racial politics between Black and East Indians. Although, based on the experiences of joint strikes between the Black oil workers and the East Indian sugar workers in 1936, the Caribbean revolutionary, C. L. R. James created the ‘Workers and Farmers Party’ to unite Trinidad’s diverse ethnic and racial groups in 1966, but WFP suffered a humiliating defeat under his leadership in the 1966 election. Since then, it lasted 30 years that the African-based ‘People’s National Movement’ became the ruling party and the Indian-based ‘Democratic Labor party’ became the opposition party. In the light of the de/creolization of East Indian Sugar Workers, this study would like to call attention to the cultural contexts of the racial politics, and to restore the forgotten histories of the imaginative work and behaviors of East Indian workers in colonial Trinidad. and It examines James’ thought on ‘the making of the Caribbean People’ and ‘West Indians of East Indian Descent’ with reference to the Creolization theories, and hopes to provide alternative framework for comprehending them.
