국문 초록

본 논문은 정치적 위기에 처해 있던 중세 말 프랑스 왕 장 2세(1350-1364)시기에 왕권의 후원 아래 시행된 『성서』에 대한 세 편의 프랑스어 번역본들, 즉 『교화 성서(Bible moralisée)』, 『장드시의 성서(Bible de Jean de Sy)』, 『이야기 성서(Bible historiale)』를 살펴보고자 한다. 속인들의 독서문화 확대, 프랑스어 번역운동의 활성화, 새로운 신앙심의 등장 등과 같이 13세기 후반부터 시작된 새로운 문화적 변혁의 흐름 속에서 장 2세는 다양한 성서 번역을 통해 한편으로는 자신의 신앙심을 지적인 수준에서 과시적으로 보여주면서도 다른 한편으로는 이를 통해 대내외적으로 비판받던 자신의 왕권을 정당화한다. 『교화 성서』와 『장드시의 성서』의 경우에는 라틴어와 프랑스어, 그리고 이미지 사이의 삼각관계가 텍스트와 이미지가 맺는 의미작용을 풍부하게 하면서 성직자의 언어인 라틴어와 속어, 특히 프랑스왕의 언어인 프랑스어 사이의 상보적 관계를 상징적으로 보여준다. 또한 『이야기 성서』는 성서의 구조를 「창세기」와 솔로몬의 「잠언」으로 양분하면서 신의 질서와 왕의 질서라는 이원적 구도를 형성한다. 특히 각종 이미지들은 정교하게 잉글랜드 에드워드 3세에 맞서 발루아 가문의 왕위계승을 정당화하는 의미와 상징들을 보여준다. 이 세 프랑스어 번역 『성서』들은 이후 왕실은 물론 대귀족들이 제작하는 『성서』들의 모델이 되었고 프랑스 왕정이 처한 각종 위기상황 속에서 프랑스 왕권의 상징자본으로 기능하였다.

영문 초록

This paper is intended to analyse the three translations of the Bible, i.e. Bible moralisée, Bible de Jean de Sy, Bible historiale, produced under the reign of John II the Good(1350-1364) situated in political crises. In the wave of new cultural mutation since the late 13th Century, as expansion of the secular reading culture, development of the French translation movement, and rise of the ‘devotio moderna’, John II, through various French translation of the Bible, showed ostentatiously his devotion in intellectual dimension, as well as tried to justify his kingship criticized internally and externally. In the cases of the Bible moralisée and the Bible de Jean de Sy, the triple relation between the Latin, the French, and the images increases significations of text-image and shows symbolically an interrelationship between the Latin, language of clergy and the French, language of laity, especially of the French kingship. Then in dividing the structure of the Bible in to two parts, the “Genesis” and the “Proverbs of Solomon”, his Bible historiale forms a political duality between the divine order and the royal order. In particular, multiple images reveal meanings and symbols for legitimizing the royal succession of the house of Valois against Edward III, king of England. Thereafter, these three French translation of the Bible became a model of the Bible commanded by members of the royal house and noblemen. They functioned as symbolic capital of the French kingship in the critical crises of French monarchy.
