독일의 시민 계급과 교양이념에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

‘교양’(Bildung)이란 개별적인 자아가 구체적 보편성을 갖는 인격체로 발전되는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 독일에서 이러한 교양이념이 나타난 것으로 괴테의 『빌헬름 마이스터의 수업시대』를 들 수 있다. 교양소설은 다른 유럽 국가에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 독일 역사의 특수성에서 나타난 개념이다. 독일의 교양이념의 목표는 인본주의적 자아의 완성에 있다. 교양소설은 젊은 주인공이 현실 세계의 험난한 역경을 이겨내고 개인의 완성 단계까지 성숙되어가는 교양 과정을 내용으로 하고 있다. 교양소설은 외부 세계와 개인의 갈등 문제를 해소하여 이성적인 개인의 완성을 추구하려는 과제를 가지고 있다. 영혼의 갈등을 극복하려는 이러한 주제는 인간과 세계와의 관계를 교육적이고 계몽적인 측면으로 해석하고, 개인과 세계와의 갈등 관계를 해소시켜 보편적인 세계 질서를 추구한다. 독일 교양소설은 국가 권력 앞에 대응하는 수단으로 내면적 자아를 추구하며, 개인주의를 표방하며 독일 문화와 독일 정신을 강조하는 것을 배경으로 하고 있다. 이러한 발전 과정이 독일적 이상주의 속에서 나타났기 때문에 교양소설이야말로 독일역사의 특징을 나타내고 있는 대표적인 문화 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 분열과 지각한 통일 국가라는 이미지를 갖고 있는 독일이라는 나라에서 시민 계급의 형성과정을, 당시 활약했던 문호 괴테의 『빌헬름 마이스터의 수업시대』에 나타난 교양이념과 교양과목에 대한 개념을 통해 고찰해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

‘Bildung’ can be said to imply the process that the individual ego is developed as personality of having specific universality. As what was shown this Bildung ideology in Germany, Goethe’s 『Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship』 can be taken. Bildungsroman is a concept that was indicated in a distinct characteristic of German history that cannot be found in other European countries. A goal of the Bildung ideology in Germany relies upon the humanistic ego. Bildungsroman is having the contents as the liberal course that a young hero proceeds with being matured up to an individual’s completion phase with overcoming rough adversity in the real world. Bildungsroman is having a task of trying to pursue a rational individual’s completion by solving an individual’s conflicting problem with the external world. This theme, which tries to overcome a conflict of soul, pursues the universal world order by analyzing a relationship between a human being and the world as the educational and enlightening aspect and by solving a conflictual relationship between an individual and the world. German Bildungsroman is having the background as seeking for the inner ego as a means of reacting to the state power, as claiming to stand for individualism, and as emphasizing German culture and German spirit. This developmental process was shown in the middle of German idealism. Thus, Bildungsroman just can be said to be one of typical cultures that represent a characteristic of German history. This study aims to consider the process of formation in bourgeoisie through the Bildung ideology and liberal arts that was shown in 『Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship』by a great writer Goethe who had been active in those days in a country called German that has image dubbed the unified state with division and tardiness.
