국문 초록

본 논문은 사례 연구를 통해 서양인들의 한국 인식 및 이에 대한 한국인들의 시각에 대해 연구하고 있다. 연구자료 수집과 분석을 위해 심층인터뷰 및 귀납적 분석법을 사용했다. 연구결과, 한국인들은 토론 문화의 부족으로 자신을 논리적으로 잘 표현할 수 없을 때 감정적으로 변하는 경향이 있으며, 유색 인종에 대한 차별 의식과는 달리 백인들에 대해서는 매우 우호적이다. 또한 문화에 대한 교육 부족으로 한국 문화가 정확히 무엇인지 모르는 경우가 많으며, 민족주의적 경향이 약해지긴 했으나 그것은 한국인들의 가슴 깊은 곳에 늘 잠재되어 있다. 한편, 한국인들은 일반적으로 정직하지 않다는 서양인들의 인식은 한국인에 대한 이해 부족에서 비롯된다고 여겨진다. 국내 원어민 영어 교사와 관련, 교사 자격에 대한 강화가 필요하며, 원어민들의 한국문화에 대한 이해, 한국 학생들에 대한 존중의 자세가 요구된다. 보다 정확한 연구 결과를 확보하기 위해서는 향후 참여 연구 방법을 활용하는 것이 필요하다고 사료된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to see if there were any similarities or differences in the perspectives of Koreans on westerners’ perceptions of Korea. In-depth interviews and analytic inductive method were utilized to collect and analyze the data. The findings of this study are as follows: The participants agree that Koreans are rather emotional than rationalistic, especially when they can’t express themselves logically, which was caused by lack of discussion culture; Koreans have been discriminating against colored people and very favorable towards white people; They do not know what exactly Korean cultures are, due to lack of education on Korean cultures; Korean nationalism is weakened, but it is still at the bottom of Korean people’s heart; People in the office of education are conservative, sensitive to hierarchy, and obedient to the hierarchy; They are very uncomfortable about westerners considering Koreans being deceptive in general; Native English teachers should be better qualified with more expertise, better understanding of Korean cultures, and more care and respect for Korean school children. A participatory research method is needed in the future to secure more accurate state of affairs of western perceptions of Korea.
