국문 초록

미국 남부사회의 “예외적 제도”아래에서 각 구성원의 움직임과 그 영향에 대해서는 다양한 연구가 진행되어 오고 있다. 그러나 이 사회의 특수한 구조에서 백인 여성, 구체적으로 마나님이라고 불리는 경우에서는 그들이 왜 노예제도를 적극적으로 옹호하고 있고, 그들이 최대한 가정에서 노예의 확보를 요구하는 것인가에 대한 연구는 그렇게 많이 되어 있지는 않은 것으로 보인다. 필자는 이런 점에 시선을 모았다. 그래서 왜 남부의 지배계급에 속한 백인 여성들이 노예의 수급에 대해서 관심을 갖고 있는지에 대해서 구체적인 사료를 중심으로 확인하여 특정 구조가 젠더학습에서 얼마나 중요한 것이 되는 것인가를 밝혀보았다. 남부여성들은 그들의 공간인 가정에서 자유로움과 여가를 위해서 그런 노력을 경주한다. 다른 한편으로 그들은 당시 사회적인 관례에서 볼 때 대개가 비공식적인 것이지만 그들만의 재산으로 노예를 소유하고 있을 때 자신의 시집에서 존경과 가치를 인정받을 확률이 더욱 높아지는 것을 사료에서 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 이유에서 그들은 주인님인 남자들만큼 자신들도 노예에 대한 깊은 관심을 보여주고 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This article aims at why, in the antebellum South, white women accepted slavery system gladly and they were very eager to obtain their slave as their property, and also they specially interested slavery system as strong as their marriage male partners. I have researched all appropriate historical resources in the famous history writings and finally, in this puzzle, could explain why white women were interested in obtaining slaves. First of all, It was very advantages that they could manage their house easily when they have slaves who help mitigate her works anytime and anywhere. Another reason was slaves who could enlarge her dignity and status in her marriage-partner house, where the mother and father-in-law and also husband expected and hoped a new bride might have brought slaves from her original home. This slaves helped, through new marriage, husband s family property. And so, all white south husband might or would have considered in this prospect and they could not but expect and escape from in this interest. Finally, antebellum South and white women were as much interested slavery system and their slaves such as helpers and property as their male partners in the plantation and house.
