이 논문은 15세기 휴머니스트 로베르 가갱의 『갈리아 전기』번역의 의도 및 특징과 이 책이 16세기 서적시장에서 인기를 얻었던 이유에 대해 살펴보고 있다. 가갱은 1485년에 카이사르의 『갈리아 전기』 번역을 완성해서 프랑스 국왕 샤를 8세에게 헌정했는데, 자신의 번역 목적을 국왕에게 정치적, 군사적인 지도자의 이상적 모델을 제공하기 위해서라고 설명했다. 또한 고대 골의 지리와 부족에 대해 자세하게 묘사하고 있는 카이사르의 책은 고대의 지명을 현재화시킨 번역을 통해 당대 프랑스의 영토와 지리적 경계에 대한 학습서로 활용될 수 있었다. 가갱의 『갈리아 전기』는 16세기 프랑스 서적시장에서 큰 호응을 얻어서 여러 번 재간되었다. 그 이유는 우선 프랑스의 지식인들이 프랑스의 기원을 고대의 골에서 찾기 시작했다는 점에 있다. 이에 따라 가갱의 『갈리아 전기』 번역은 16세기에 프랑스에서 골족이 프랑크족과 나란히 민족의 조상으로 대접받게 되는 전기를 제공했다. 또한 1493년부터 시작된 이탈리아 전쟁도『갈리아 전기』에 대한 관심을 증폭시키는데 기여했다.

영문 초록

This article aims to observe the intentions and characteristics of the translation of Les Commentarii de bello Gallico by the humanist Robert Gaguin and to consider the reason as to why it received such popularity in the 16th century book market. Even though the Caesar’s writing on the Gallic Wars was known to some extent in the Middle Ages, it was only until the late 15th century that a complete translation of the “rediscovered” text was achieved. While the medieval translation freely adapted texts, Gaguin’s translation aimed for a faithful translation to the original. However, the latter differs from modern translation in that it transposes the historical context of the text to the culture and situation of the day, and that it often adds an explanation for readers’ understanding. Gaguin completed his translation in 1485 and dedicated it to the French King Charles VIII. He explained that his purpose of translation was to provide the king with an ideal model of political and military leadership. Les Commentaires de Jules César of Robert Gaguin could also be used as a guidebook on the French kingdom’s territories and geographical boundaries by its actualization of the names of ancient locations. The translation of Caesar’s book introduced to the ancient Gaul to the french readers. In addition, by emphasizing the long history of France, it simultaneously fostered national pride in ancestry who had fought against the mighty Rome. Les Commentaires of Robert Gaguin has been reprinted numerous times in the 16th century French book market. The primary reason as to why it received great popularity is due to the spread of the discourse of Reditus regni Francorum ad stirpem Gallicam among the French humanist milieu. Gaguin’s translation contributed to enhance the Gauls as the French people’s ancestors along with the Franks. Furthermore, the outbreak of the Italian Wars also helped boost interest on the book
