종교의 위기 속에 ‘종교’는 여전히 유효한가? - ‘유발 하라리’의 종교 비판에 대한 신학적 성찰 -

국문 초록

최근 사피엔스 신드롬을 일으키고 있는 역사학자 유발 하라리는 그의 주저 호모 데우스에서 “종교는 사회질서를 유지하고 대규모 협력을 조직하는 도구”이며, 종교는 사회적 질서에 관심을 갖고, 종교의 목표는 사회 구조를 만들고 유지하는 것”일 뿐이라는 인류 종교에 대한 문명사적 비판을 시작했다. 그리고 호모 사피엔스인 인간이 추구하는 문명의 미래는 상호주관적 실재를 토대로 협력하며 이끌어낼 새로운 문명의 시대이며, 그 시대는 역사 속에서 제도로서 세속적 질서와 힘에 타협해온 기성 종교들이 아니라, 인간이 더 이상 신에 종속되지 않고 스스로 신성의 영역을 자신 안에서 찾으려는 새로운 종교성 의 발현이라고 말한다. 유발 하라리가 비판하는 ‘신 앞에 선 인간’이란 전통적인 서구의 종교성은 신에 대한 물음을 통해 의문에 처해졌으며, 신 존재에 뿌리를 둔 종교에 대한 담론은 서구의 종교철학과 종교학의 다양한 성찰을 통해서 시도되었지만, 제도로서의 종교는 종교의 사물화, 종교의 이데올로기화, 종교 개념을 일부 종교성으로 축소하는 등의 문제로 인해 위기에 처하게 되었다. 오늘날에는 종교 개념의 인간학적 해명과 그리스도교로 대표되는 서구의 계시 종교의 절대성에 대비되는 다원주의적 종교 해명을 통하여 인류의 보편적 종교성을 특정 종교의 관점이 아니라 인류의 다양한 종교 체험을 토대로 재규정하려는 시도로 이어졌다. 그 결과 그리스도교 신학 역시 신중심주의적 종교관에서 벗어나 인간중심적, 구원중심적 종교관을 수용하며 이를 그리스도교 계시 종교의 고유성을 상실하는 일 없이 새롭게 규정하려는 연구도 활발해지고 있다. 유발 하라리의 종교 비판은 단순히 종교의 무용성과 무가치성이 아닌 새로운 문명 시대에 인류가 맞이해야할 종교성의 재규정이며, 제도 종교가 안고 있는 모순을 넘어서는 새로운 종교적 질서에 대한 요청이기도 하다. 인류의 종교계에 확산되고 있는 ‘영성’의 요구는 과연 이러한 종교의 위기에 대안이 될것인가? 아니면 종교의 본질에 대한 새로운 규정이 필요한 것일까? 우리는 이물음에 답을 찾아야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Historian Yuval Noah Harari, who currently brings Sapiens syndrome, started the history of civilization criticism on human religion in his famous book “Homo Deus” as to “religion is the tool to keep the public order and to organize the large scale of cooperation”, “religion pays attention to public order, its object is to make and keep the social structure”. And the future civilization which man, Homo Sapiens, pursues is the era of new civilization driving cooperation from inter subjective reality. In that era, the new religion manifestation will be that of human being is no longer subject to God but finds self divine domain within him/her self, which is far from pre-existing religions that were compromised with secular order and existed power in history. The traditional Western religious sentiment as ‘man standing in front of God’ which Yuval Harari criticized faced the question of doubting question about God. The discourse which was rooted from the presence of God has been attempted by diverse examination of Western religious philosophy and the science of religion, but the religion as a system faced the crisis because of materialization of religion, ideology of religion and reduction of certain concept of religion to religious sentiment. These days, through anthropological explanation of religion concept and pluralistic religion explanation contrasted to absolutism, which was shown in Western revealed religion, the common religious sentiment of humanity is connected to an attempt to redefind based on man’s various religious experiences not just as a certain religion viewpoint. As a result, active studies are going on to define newly sentiment, Christian theology also strays from God-oriented sentiment, accepting human-oriented, salvation-oriented sentiment, without losing of Christianity uniqueness. The religious criticism of Yuval Harari is redefining the religious sentiment which human being is to face in new civilization era, not as a simple religion of uselessness and worthlessness, but as a request of new religious order beyond the paradox of existing institutional religions. Is the prevailing ‘spirituality’ which is requested in the human religious world can be the alternative to such a religious crisis? Or do we need a new rule about the essence of religion? We should find the answer to this question.
