영문 초록

Walking is the most basic transportation for human beings, especially for children. It is necessary to build safe routes to school. The purpose of this study is to identify the association between built environment factors and pedestrian traffic accidents around elementary schools. Independent variables used the factors of road type, road facilities, public transportation, land use, and land development density provided in the country. Built environmental variables were generated into the geo-database system with the use of Arcgis. A spatial regression model was employed for the consideration of spatial autocorrelation. The main results are as follows. First, as the width of the roads was narrow, pedestrian traffic accidents occurred more frequently. Second, crosswalks, intersections, speed bumps, roadside trees, and parks showed a negative relationship with pedestrian traffic accidents. Third, public transportation had a positive correlation with pedestrian traffic accidents. This research is expected to be used as an empirical basis for creating safe walking environment around elementary schools.
