영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to find a reasonable way to international development cooperation of Republic of Fiji. An understanding of recipient country is a requisite for the success of international development cooperation. Some traditions of Republic of Fiji contradicts modern sense of economy. Concentration of wealth in poor environment caused conflict and war. Population growth and food shortage were main cause of cannibalism in many areas. Cannibalism has been around for centuries in Republic of Fiji. So there is a special defense mechanism to prevent conflict and war in Republic of Fiji. This defense mechanism of Republic of Fiji was known as ‘kerekere’. This defense mechanism is widely dispersed in the South Pacific. They were known as ‘big men’. Reciprocative exchange and distribution and conspicuous consumption are common in these defense mechanism. These tradition of Republic of Fiji has prevented acceptance of western economic system. In different cultures, the lines between the acceptable and unacceptable are drawn differently. There is collision and compatibility between tradition of Republic of Fiji and International Development Cooperation. I implemented geographical, ethnological, social and cultural, political, economical consideration of Republic of Fiji. Fiji rural extension has a nationwide organizations and officers. Since the 1960s, Fiji has been doing joint research with IRRI. I suggested understanding of tradition of Republic of Fiji, international rural extension, job creation, attracting investment, and eco-friendly development as directions of international development cooperation of Republic of Fiji.
