한국 근현대불교의 태동과 擎雲 元奇

국문 초록

경운 원기는 한국 역사의 전통과 근대를 살다 간 인물이다. 이 시기 한국불교 역시 큰 전환기를 맞이하고 있었다. 경운은 조선후기 불교계에서 부흥했지만, 19세기부터 그 명맥이 희미해진 한국불교의 선교학과 염불, 그리고 계율의 전통을 선암사의 스승들로부터 온전히 계승한 인물이다. 때문에 일본인조차도 결연하게 한국불교의 정체성을 보호 유지해온 인물로 평가하였다. 일제강점기 일본불교의 유입으로 승가의 질서가 혼란스러웠지만, 제자들은 경운을 보는 자체로 계율을 듣는 것처럼 마음에 두려움을 느꼈다고 하였다. 경운은 선암사의 무너진 계율을 체계화시키기도 하였다. 훗날 최남선은 경운이 계율을 지키는 것은 얽매여서 지키는 것이 아닌 좋아서 하는 고결한 실천이었다고 하였다. 그가 결성한 백련결사 역시 불교를 모르는 사람들조차도 불교에 입문할 정도로 깊은 영향을 끼쳤다. 그는 당시 불교계의 교단 설립과 함께 한국불교의 방향설정에도 중요한 역할을 맡았다. 당시 불교교단의 한국불교의 후학 양성과 포교 향상을 위한 노력은 경운이 유일하게 산문 밖을 나가는 이유였다. 경운의 제자들은 걸출했다. 영호 정호·진응 혜찬·금봉 병연은 경운에게 선교학을 수학했을 뿐만 아니라 그의 불교정신을 따르고자 하였다. 제자들은 당시 불교계에서 경운의 뒤를 이어 후학양성과 한국불교 안정과 발전에 진력하였다.

영문 초록

The Emergence in the Modern and Contemporary Buddhism in Korea and KYUNGUN-WONGI(擎雲 元奇) KYUNGUN-WONGI is a person who has lived the tradition and modernity of Korean history. During this period, Korean Buddhism was also in a great turning point. KYUNGUN is a person who inherited the tradition of Study of Zen and Non-zen Buddhism, Chantingf Buddhism, Vinaya Pitaka of the Korean Buddhism which has been blurred since the 19th century. Because of this, even the Japanese have regarded the Buddhist identity of the Korean Buddhism as a person who has maintained the identity. Although the order of Korean Buddhism was confused by the influx of Japanese Buddhism during the Japanese colonial rule, The disciples said that they were afraid of their hearts as if they were listening to the commandments themselves. KYUNGUN has also systematized the collapse of Sun-am Temple(仙巖寺). In the future, Choi Nam-seon(崔南善) said that KYUNGUN was a virtuous practice to keep the Vinaya, not to stick to and keep it. He formed Baekryeon-gyeolsa(白蓮結社), even the people who did not know Buddhism had a deep influence on Buddhism. He also played an important role in establishing the direction of Korean Buddhism as well as establishing Buddhism’s Order(Samgha) at the time. At that time, Buddhist denomination s efforts to nurture the post-Buddhist education of the Korean Buddhism and to improve the Propagation were the only reason for the tide to go outside the prose. The disciples of Tongun were outstanding. Han-Young Park( 朴漢永)·Jin Jin Eung(陳震應)·Geumbong byeong-yeon(錦峰 秉演) The disciples followed the tide of Buddhism at that time, and they devoted themselves to the education of Buddhism and to the stability and development of Buddhism in Korea.
