국문 초록

擎雲元奇선사는 뛰어난 학승이었을 뿐만 아니라, 詩書畵 삼절에 통달한 文藝一致의 예술가였다. 이에 본고는 먼저 신라인으로 金生과 靈業, 그리고 화엄사의 華嚴石經, 통일신라의 崔致遠 등, 고려인으로 坦然과 機俊, 그리고 墓誌와 寫經 등의 유물, 조선시대의 淸虛와 惟政을 비롯하여 조선 말기의 秋史와 草衣까지 많은 승려서예가를 살펴보았다. 이에 선사의 寫經서예는 역대의 사경과 금석을 바탕으로 뼈(骨)와 살(肉)이 적당하고 아름다운 자태를 이루는 가운데 嚴正함이 있다. 아울러 선사가 남긴 사경이외의 서예작품은 楷書와 行草書작품이 주를 이룬다. 그의 행초서에서는 필획과 자형의 변화가 추사 김정희의 영향을 받은 흔적이 뚜렷하다. 이는 경운선사와 梵海覺岸, 錦溟寶鼎과의 교류는 추사와 교분이 두터운 초의와 연계되어 있다. 아울러 화엄학에서의 백파긍선과 추사의 사상적 영향이 경운선사에게 이어졌음도 추측이 가능하다. 이들을 통하여 경운선사는 간접적으로나마 추사 서예에 영향을 받지 않을 수 없었을 것이다. 또한 경운선사의 서예에는 중국의 歐陽詢과 蘇軾의 필획이 보인다. 특히 사경에서의 엄정함을 간찰 등의 행서에서는 필획의 굵고 가늠과 자형의 많은 변화로 豁達自在한 높은 격조를 보여주고 있다. 이는 전통과 俗氣에서 벗어남이며 아무 거리낌이 없는 무욕의 독창적인 예술정신의 표현이다. 아울러 전체적인 章法과 느낌을 중요시하고 있다. 이는 고전의 筆意를 취하여 겸양의 인격미와 무욕의 정신세계를 담아내는 선사의 독창적인 예술 표현이다. ‘書如其人’이라고 한다. 선사의 글씨는 선사의 성정과 기질이 그대로 나타난 또 다른 경운선사이다. 꾸밈없는 진솔함과 거리낌 없는 담백함은 心筆의 경지에 들어서서 무엇에도 구애받지 않은 붓놀림을 보여주고 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Gyeongunwonki Seonsa was an academically accomplished Buddhist priest, and an artist who mastered three arts of poetry, writing and painting. In particular, he became a distinguished calligrapher due to life-long efforts and devotion. In this article, we first examined calligraphy materials related to Buddhism and priest calligraphers of the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo and Joseon period. These include Kim Saeng(金生) and Youngeop(靈業), Hwaeomseokgyeong(華嚴石經) at Hwaeomsa Temple from Silla Dynasty, Choi Chiwon(崔致遠) from Unified Silla, Tanyeon(坦然) and Gijun(機俊), relics of Myoji(墓誌) and Sagyeong(寫經) from Goryeo, Cheongheo (淸虛) and Yujeong(惟政) from Joseon Dynasty, and Chusa(秋史) and Choeui(草衣). Priest Gyeongunseonsa left behind many letters, writings, as well as works of calligraphy and painting. Based on his works, we examined his life, academic colleagues, and traces of ink he left. His works of calligraphy in sagyeong(寫經) style is based on historical sagyeong and letters, have a right amount of bones and flesh, and exude a sense of rigorousness. His other calligraphy works are mostly in styles of haeseo(楷書) and haengchoseo(行草書). In the latter, the influence of Chusa Kim Jeonghee on brush strokes and shape of characters is notable. His exchanges with priests Beomhaegakan(梵海覺岸) and Geummyeongbojeong(錦溟寶鼎) are related with Choeui who had a close friendship with Chusa. Also, we can surmise that philosophical ideas of Baekpageungseon on the Study of Hwaeom and Chusa passed onto Gyeongunseonsa. Accordingly, his calligraphy would have been affected by Chusa, if indirectly. Gyeongunseonsa’s brush strokes also reflect influence of Soshik(蘇軾) of Song Dynasty and Gu Yangsun(歐陽詢) of Tang Dynasty. In contrast to rigorousness shown in works of sagyeong style, his letters have a liberal and dignified air with varying thickness of strokes and many changes in shape of characters. They are not bound by convention or worldly taste, and instead express guileless, original spirit of art. He did not care much for thickness or length of strokes, or size of characters’ compositions, and instead regarded an overall style and atmosphere important. It is his original artistic expression whereby he put modest personality, free and generous spirit into a classical form. There is a saying ‘Seoyeokiin(書如其人)’, and Gyeongunseonsa’s writings are his embodiment that express his temperament and spirit. As an accomplished calligrapher, his unrestricted brush strokes reveal guileless honesty and free spirit.
