국문 초록

본고는 《紅樓夢》에 나오는 호칭어 ‘姐姐’의 의미에 대해 고찰한 논문이다. 《紅樓夢》은 18 세기 중국사회에서 쓰이고 있던 언어의 백과전서라고도 일컬어지고 있는데, 그중에서도 호칭어의 위상은 각별하다. 《紅樓夢》은 중국 고대로부터 전해 내려오던 호칭어를 계승하였을 뿐만 아니라 《紅樓夢》만의 독특한 특징을 지니고 있다. 장편대작인 《紅樓夢》에는 수많은 등장인물이 출현하고 있으며 그들 간에 각종 관계가 설정되어 있으므로, 호칭어의 작용은 두말 할 것도 없이 중요하다. 이처럼 중요한 의미를 지니고 있는 《紅樓夢》의 호칭어는 언어운 용의 巨匠이라고 불리는 작자 조설근의 수완에 힘입어 청대 호칭어의 면모를 재현시킨 活化 石이라고도 평가되고 있다. 필자는 《紅樓夢》을 번역하는 과정에서 수많은 난관에 봉착하였 는데 그 가운데 하나가 바로 이와 같은 의의를 지니는 호칭어에 대한 번역이었으며, 그중에 서도 가장 번역하기 어려웠던 호칭어가 ‘姐姐’였다. 번역하는 과정에서 무엇보다도 작품 가운데 다양한 스펙트럼으로 쓰이고 있는 ‘姐姐’에 대한 정확한 이해가 절실했으며, ‘姐姐’의 의미에 대한 정확한 이해는 그 자체만으로도 대단히 중요할뿐더러 정확한 이해가 전제되지 않는다면 바람직한 번역은 기대하기 어렵다는 각성이 수반되었다. 본고는 바로 이와 같은 문제의식으로부터 출발하였다. 필자는 《紅樓夢》의 호칭어 ‘姐姐’의 의미와 그 번역 양상에 대하여 首尾一貫하게 한 편의 논문으로 작성하고자 하였으나, 편폭의 제한으로 인하여 상하두 편으로 나누어 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 상편에 해당하는 본고에서는 《紅樓夢》의 호칭어 ‘姐姐’의 의미에 대하여 분석하고자 하며, 후속으로 이어질 하편에서는 상편의 논의를 바탕 으로 英譯本⋅日譯本⋅韓譯本의 번역 양상을 비교⋅분석함으로써 호칭어 ‘姐姐’의 번역에 대하여 고찰해보도록 할 것이다. 《紅樓夢》의 호칭어 ‘姐姐’의 의미에 대하여 본고에서는 친족호칭어와 사회호칭어로 나누어 살펴보고자 하며, 사전적 의미⋅출현 형태와 출현 방식⋅ 출현 빈도분석과 함께 친족호칭어 ‘姐姐’와 사회호칭어 ‘姐姐’가 《紅樓夢》에서 쓰이고 있는 전형적 용례와 특기할 만한 용례를 각각 제시함으로써 구체적 이해를 도모하도록 할 것이 다. 《紅樓夢》의 호칭어 ‘姐姐’에 대한 본고의 논의가 호칭어연구의 일환으로서의 의미뿐만 아니라, 18세기 청대 사회에 대한 사회적⋅문화적 이해를 돕기 위한 유효한 통로가 될 수있기를 기대해본다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the meaning of the address terms ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions(紅樓夢). A Dream of Red Mansions is also referred to as the encyclopedia of language used in Chinese society in 18th century. Among them, the address terms occupy a special position. A Dream of Red Mansions has inherited the address terms handed down from the ancient China as well as possesses its own unique characteristics. There are numerous characters appearing in A Dream of Red Mansions, which is a long voluminous novel, and various relationships established between them. Therefore, the function of the address terms is undoubtedly important. There were a lot of difficulties with the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions. One of them was to translate the address terms with such a meaning, and the address terms most difficult to translate was ‘jiejie(姐姐)’. In the translation process, there was a desperate need for an accurate understanding of ‘jiejie(姐姐)’, which is used in different spectrums in the work. It was perceived that an accurate understanding of the meaning of ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ was highly important in itself and that its absence would make it difficult to get a good translation of ‘jiejie(姐姐)’. This study started based on this perception. A study on the meaning of the address terms ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions and the aspects of its translation were intended to be covered in one paper for a consistent understanding of the whole. However, the paper is divided into first and second parts due to limited section and volume, and each study is performed accordingly. This paper, which is the first part, analyzes the meaning of the address terms ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions. In the following second part, the translation of ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ will be examined by comparing and analyzing the aspects of English, Japanese and Korean translations, based on the discussions in the first part. In this paper, the meaning of the address terms ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions will be examined in termsof kinship terms of address and social appellations, and the typical and remarkable usages of kinship terms of address ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ and social appellations ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions will be presented with the analysis of their lexical meanings and their form, mode and frequency of appearance to develop a tangible understanding. This paper’s discussion on the address terms ‘jiejie(姐姐)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions is expected to have a significant meaning in a study on the address terms as well as to serve as a useful pathway to help social and cultural understanding of the Qing society in 18th century.
