영문 초록

This paper discusses the elementary life zone from the geographical sphere point of view and attempts to classify 163 cities and counties in Korea using cluster analysis. On the basis of the analysis results, the author argues that new concept of middle-range life zone should be introduced to complement the current life zone system on which the regional development and economy plans are based. In contrast to the elementary life zone, the middle-range life zone includes from two to five or six first-tier local governments so that morei area-wide public projects could be effectively and collaboratively implemented in[ a bigger jurisdiction. The author finally concludes that what is called, ’the concept of middle-range life zone is more suitable term to denote the size of life zone which is bigger than the elementary zone, but smaller than region-wide zone.
