국문 초록

외자유입의 경제 성장에 미치는 영향에 대한 기존 연구는 이론적 및 경험적인 시점에서 다양한 결과를 제기한다. 연구 결과는 그 연구 과정에서 대상으로 선정된 나라와 탐구되는 기간에 따라 다르다. 또한, 기존 연구 자료 중 상당수가 외자 각종의 영향에 대해서 종류 별 따로따로 조사해 왔다. 외자의 한 가지 독립 변수를 적용해서 회귀 분석을 진행하는 방식을 통해서 누락변수로 인한 측정오류 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 외자 종류 각각이 개발도상국이 발전하기 위해서 아주 중요한 역할을 하기 때문이다. 따라서 본고는 외자유입 (외국인 직접투자, 해외송금, 공적 개발원조 및 외채)의 남아프리카 관세 동맹 (SACU) 회원국 (연구 대상국: 보츠와나, 레소토, 남아공 및 스와질란드; 나미비아가 제외되었음 ) 각국의 경제 성장에 미치는 영향에 대해서 살펴봤다. 본 연구는 신고전파 성장 모형을 이론적 프레임워크로 정의하여 1975- 2017 년 연간 데이터를 이용해서 자기 회귀시차분포 모형(ARDL model)을 응용하였다. 자기회귀시차분포 모형을 통해서 추정해 본 결과, 외국인 직접투자 변수가 남아공하고 스와질란드 그 두 개국만의 경제에 한하여 긍정적 효과를 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 더불어 해외송금 변수가 총 회원국 중 4개국의 경제 성장에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤으나 레소토 하고 남아공 경제가 해외송금으로 인하여 부정적인 충격을 받는 것으로 알려졌다. 한편, 공적 개발원조 변수가 스와질란드 경제 발전에 긍정적 효과를 준 반면, 보츠와나에 대한 추정이 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한 외채 변수는 보츠와나, 레소토 및 스와질란드 이 3개국의 성장에 이바지를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구가 실행한 추정이 상기와 같은 다양한 결과를 가져다 준 것이 외자유입의 한 나라의 경제적 성장에 대한 영향이 도입되는 자금 종류 및 피원조국이 어느 나라인지에 따라 차이가 날 수 있다는 결론을 제기한다.

영문 초록

The existing literature regarding the impact of foreign capital inflows on economic growth exhibits inconclusive results, in both theoretical and empirical perspectives. It depends on the studied country and studied period. In addition, most of the previous works examine the effect of each type of foreign capital individually. The regression with a single independent variable of foreign capital may lead to an omitted variable bias problem since all kinds of foreign capitals are important for economic growth of developing countries. Consequently, this article examines the effect of foreign capital inflows (foreign direct investment, international remittance, official development assistance and foreign debt) on economic growth of the member states (Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland, excluded Namibia) of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). The study refines the neoclassical growth model as the theoretical framework and employs the auto regressive distributed lag (ARDL) model for the empirical estimations, using annual data during 1975 to 2017. The empirical findings reveal that the foreign direct investment contributes to economic growth only in South Africa and Swaziland. The international remittance affects economic growth in all four countries, but the negative effects are detected in Lesotho and South Africa. While the official development assistance shows the positive effect on economic growth of Swaziland, the negative effect is found in Botswana. The external debt also contributes to economic growth of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. These imply that the effect of foreign capital inflows on economic growth depends on type of capital and a certain recipient country.
