초기 중국불교 여성수행자의 神異譚 고찰

국문 초록

보창의 비구니전은 초기 중국불교 비구니들의 다양한 측면들을 포함하고 있다. 여러 신이한 행적에서 그들의 능력은 사회적인 참여의 결과일 뿐만 아니라 종교 수행자로서의 결과로 볼 수 있다. 결국 비구니들이 종교적 수행과 사회에서의 노력에 대한 감응을 받는다는 사실은 전통적인 중국 사회에서 비구니로서 그들의 위치를 확인시켜준다. 또한 불교가 중국에 전해지는 과정에서 이러한 神異譚은 사람들을 불교로 끌어들이는 중요한 형식의 하나로 볼 수 있다. 불교에서 중생교화의 방편으로 중시되어 온 神異에 대한 사고방식은 이와 같이 비구니전에서도 볼 수 있다. 이것은 인도불교 이후 선정과 지계의 실천에 의해서 끊임없이 이루어진 결과물로 인식되었는데, 비구니전 역시 선수행, 선정의 깊은 삼매에 든 결과로 얻게 된 종교적 힘을 비구니들의 다양한 모습을 통하여 보여주었다. 불교에서 선정은 계정혜 삼학이라는 수행체계의 핵심이다. 그러므로 선을 수행하고 선정에 든 여성수행자들을 뛰어난 비구니로서 기록한 것은 당연할 것이다. 비구니전에서는 자신에 대한 서사의 중심에 있는 불교여성수행자들의 신이에 묘사된 능력과 힘이 종교적인 성취의 일부분이 되는 모습과 과정을 볼 수 있다. 비구니전에서 신이는 초월적이고 비일상적인 종교적 힘에 대한 설명일 뿐만 아니라 비구니들의 수행에서 자연스러운 결과이며 불교에 대한 귀의라는 그들의 올바른 선택에 대한 확증으로 나타난다. 이러한 의미에서 비구니전의 신이담은 남성에 비해 여성이 수행과 불교적 실천을 할 수 없다는 일부의 그릇된 인식에 대한 반증과 사회가 만들어낸 여성의 전통적인 역할에 대한 대안을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Baochang’s Biqiuni zhuan(Biographies of Nuns) describes various images of biqiunis in the early Chinese Buddhism. Biqiunis’ many miraculous deeds suggest that their ability was attained not only by social participation but also by religious practice. In other words, the fact that biqiunis’ endeavors both in religion and society were answered indicates their status in traditional Chinese society. In addition, such miracle tales(神異譚) can also be regarded as one of the essential attractions when Buddhism was introduced into China. Thus, Biqiuni zhuan also shows the important position of shenyi(神異 thaumaturgy) in Buddhism as a means of edifying people. Since the days of Indian Buddhism, shenyi was recognized as the achievement of Buddhist meditation(禪定 Dhyāna-samādhi) and endless practice of precepts(sila). Biqiuni zhuan conveys biqiunis’ various deeds, who had religious power after attaining samādhi through Chán(禪) practice or Buddhist meditation (Dhyāna-samādhi). Dhyana and samadhi is the core of Buddhist threefold training (śikṣā) system. Accordingly, it is quite natural to record women Chán practitioners attaining Buddhist meditation as excellent biqiunis. Biqiuni zhuan focuses its narrative on women Buddhist practitioners and describes how their abilities and powers, which were revealed in shenyi, became a part of religious achievement. In Biqiuni zhuan, shenyi(神異 thaumaturgy) not only explains transcendental and extraordinary religious powers but also confirms that such miraculous deeds are the natural product of biqiunis’ practice and the proof of their right choice, that is, their devotion to Buddhism. In this regard, the miracle tales of Biqiuni zhuan provides counter examples to the biased allegation that women are not as good as men in Buddhist meditation and practice. Moreover, the miracle tales could also show an alternative image to the traditional one granted to women by society.
