한센병력인이 느끼는 차별의 양상과 해소에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 2014년 5월부터 2018년 6월까지 4년 동안 산청 성심원에 거주하는 한센병력인들과 함께 시를 읽으며 그들의 시창작을 돕고, 그들의 이야기를 들어주면서 사회구조적으로 만들어진 차별에 의한 심리적인 문제와 그 해소 방안을 인문학에서 찾고자 노력한 과정에 대한 고찰이다. 그들이 경험한 차별의 양상을 살펴보기 위하여 30명을 대상으로 설문지 조사를 하였으며, 설문조사 이후에도 지속적인 만남과 대화를 이어갔다. 한센병력인 30명을 대상으로 진행한 설문지와 4년 간 지속된 그들과의 대화에서 나타난 문제는 차별로 인한 서러움, 외로움, 분노, 자괴감 등으로 인한 심리적 박탈감이었다. 이러한 부정적인 감정은 자존감 상실로 이어지고 그들의 삶은 위축되었다. 차별의 최초원인이었던 한센병은 완치되었지만, 그들은 여전히 사회와 구분된 시설에 생활하며 심리적인 문제가 지속되고 있었다. 이 연구에서 4년 동안 적용한 인문학적 해소 방안은 ‘시를 읽고 쓰는 것’과 ‘그들의 이야기를 들어줌으로써 그들 스스로 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 돕는 것’이었다. 시모임에 참여한 10명은 시와 함께 시인의 생애도 이야기하면서 자연적으로 그들의 마음을 시로 나타냈다. 비록 시창작에 대한 이론적인 지식이 없어도 그들의 고통과 삶을 진솔하게 표현한 글은 시가 되었고, 창작시로 이야기 나누며 자존감을 회복해나갔다. 설문지를 매개로 시작된 한센병력인들과의 대화는 시작은 어려웠으나 시간이 지나면서 그들의 내면 깊이 숨겨져 왔던 고통의 실체를 말하기에 이르렀다. 그들은 인간존재의 삶이나 행복, 또는 존엄성에 대해 때로는 분노하고 때로는 자조적으로 말했지만, 말하기가 계속되면서 나타난 긍정적 현상은 현재의 자신을 부정하거나 회피하지 않는 것이었다. 그들에게 고통과 슬픔은 버릴 수도 없고 버려지지도 않는 것이지만 극복 가능한 것임을 말하기를 통하여 스스로 알아가고 있었다. 한센병력인들을 대상으로 한 설문지의 응답내용과 창작시, 그리고 말하기에서 나타난 것은 차별 속에서 살아가는 사람들에게 필요한 심리적인 지지의 방법이 자기 자신에 대한 애도라는 점이다. 참여자들은 시를 읽고 쓰며, 자신의 삶을 말하면서 자신에 대한 애도의 시간을 가졌고, 현재 삶에 대한 이해를 통해 차별로 인한 문제를 해소해 나갔다.

영문 초록

The study is about finding and solving psychological problems caused by discrimination based on social structure by reading poems and listening to their story while listening to the story with Hansen′s who live in Seomsimwon for four years from May 2014 to June 2018. They surveyed 30 people for the aspects of discrimination they experienced and continued to meet and talk even after the survey. Although the first cause of social discrimination was Hansen s disease, the pain they are now experiencing was psychological deprivation caused by social discrimination. The psychological deprivation that emerged from the questionnaire that surveyed 30 people and the four years of dialogue with them formed feelings of sorrow, loneliness, anger, and shame. These negative emotions led to loss of self-esteem and their lives shrunk. Although Hansen s disease, which was the first cause of discrimination, was completely cured, they still lived in facilities separated from society and continued to have psychological problems. The four-year-long anthropological treatment in the study was to read and write poetry and to help them voice themselves by listening to their stories. Ten people who participated in the rally naturally expressed their minds as poems, talking about the poet s life as well. Even without a theoretical knowledge of poetry, the writing of their pain and life became a poem, talking to each other through creative writing and restoring self-esteem. Conversation with Hansen s soldiers, who began with the survey, was difficult to begin, but over time they were able to tell the substance of suffering that had been hidden deep inside them. They spoke of life, happiness, or dignity of human beings at times, and sometimes self-helpfully, but the phenomenon that continued to emerge as they spoke was not denying or avoiding the present self. For them, pain and sadness were something that could not be abandoned, but could be overcome. What appears in the responses, creation and speaking of the questionnaire to the Hansen people is that the psychological way to support those living in discrimination is to mourn. The participants read and write poems, took time to mourn themselves while talking about their own lives, and solved the problem of discrimination through an understanding of current life.
