영허 해일의 <金剛山>에 관한 一考察

국문 초록

暎虛海日의 유람 기록은 간결하고 간명하면서도 수행자의 求道정신이 응축되어 있어 다른 遊記작품들과는 상당히 변별된다고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 아직까지 그 작품에 대한 번역과 논의가 본격화되지 않은 것이 현실이다. 이에 본고는 그가 지은 <금강산>을 번역하고, 표현 방식과 구성의 특징을 살펴봄으로써 영허 해일의 독창적인 창작 방식을 드러내 보고자 하였다. <금강산>에서 주목되는 점은 작가의 사유체계에 따라 사찰명과 봉우리명 등을 배치하여 그 뜻을 나타내고자했다는 것이다. 이는 기존의 遊山錄작품들이 대부분 유람자의 시간과 장소의 노정에 따라 견문을 기록하고 산천을 묘사한 것과는 다른 체제와 서술적 특징을 보여준다. 사찰이나 봉우리의 명칭과 지명을 사용하여 산의 아름다운 절경을 묘사하고, 불교 유적과 그에 얽힌 불 국토의 자취 등을 기록하였다. 불교 유적을 서술함에 있어서 수식은 과감히 생략하고 그 골자만을 표현해낼 수 있는 명칭이나 지명을 선택하여 맥락이 통할 수 있도록 배치하였다. 또한 산수의 절경을 묘사함에 있어서도 그 경관을 나타낼 수 있는 명칭을 택하여 의미를 전달하는 간결함을 보여주고 있다. 본고에서는 금강산 소재의 사찰이나 봉우리 명칭과 지명들의 배치가 그의 불교적 사유와도 무관하지 않을 것으로 보고 실제로 형상화된 곳의 지리적위치와 의미를 고찰해 보았다. 명칭과 지명들은 금강산을 문학적으로 형상화하는 데 사용되어 사찰의 지리적 위치를 나타내거나 작가의 불교관 등을 드러내는 데 반영되고 있었다. 이러한 문장 구성은 영허 해일만의 독특한 창작방식으로 연구자들에게 시사하는 바가 적지 않다.

영문 초록

The sightseeing records by Yeongheo Haeil(暎虛海日) are markedly different from other sightseeing works since they are simple and clear and contain the spirit of exploring Buddhist doctrines of disciplinants. However, in reality, translation and discussion of Yeongheo Haeil s sightseeing records have not been conducted yet. In this light, this study aimed to reveal unique writing method by Yeongheo Haeil by translating and examining the expression style and characteristics of composition. One thing to note from is that he tried to show meaning by putting temple names and peak names based on his thinking system. This is different from the existing Yusanrok(遊山錄) works having recorded experiences based on time and place journey of traveler and descriptions of mountains and streams. described beautiful views of the mountain by mentioning the names of temples and peaks and recorded Buddhist remains and traces of Buddha s land. With regard to stating the remains related to Buddhism, contexts were arranged so that they make sense by drastically omitting rhetorical expressions and choosing the names which can express the essentials. In addition, when it came to describing the beautiful views of the mountain and streams, meaning delivery was precise since only the expression showing the scenery were selected. This study took into account the geographical locations and meaning of the embodied names after seeing that the arrangement of names will not be irrelevant from his Buddhist thinking. The names either showed geographical locations of temples or have been reflected in showing the writer s Buddhist values. These sentence compositions have many implications toward researchers since they are unique writing style of Yeongheo Haeil.
