조선시대 고문서로 본 거북선의 내부 구조

국문 초록

거북선의 내부 구조에 대해서는 전통적으로 2층설과 3층설 등 두 가지 견해가 대립해 왔다. 최근에는 2층설과 3층설을 절충해서 거북선은 3층 구조지만 3층에 위치한 갑판은 현측에 사람이 직립자세로 서 있을 수 없는 불완전한 구조를 가졌다고 보는 준3층설(반3층설)을 주장하는 연구자도 있다. 혹은 3층이지만 거북선의 개판이 곡선 형태가 아니라 다각형 구조였다고 보는 주장도 나오고 있다. 『이충무공전서(李忠武公全書)』는 통제영 거북선[龜船]이 이순신 장군의 옛 제도를 따른 것이라고 설명하고 있다. 그런데 통제영 거북선 그림을 보면 외관상 2층 구조처럼 보이면서도, 개판(蓋版)에 포혈이 있어 실제로는 준3층 구조였을 가능성이 높다. 결국 임진왜란 당시의 거북선도 준3층 구조였을 가능성이 있다. 임진왜란 당대의 사료는 아니지만 조선 후기의 고문서 중에 당시 거북선이 준3층 구조를 가지고 있었음을 뒷받침하는 내용을 담고 있는 사례가 있다.「귀선중기(龜船重記)」와 『경기수영중기(京畿水營重記)』가 대표적이다. 「귀선중기」의 거북선은 본판(저판) 길이 12파(60자)에 전체 높이는 14자(尺)다. 『이충무공전서』에 나오는 거북선 규격에 따르면 거북선의 현판(외판)의 높이는 7.5자다. 저판 길이를 기준으로「귀선중기」의 거북선은 『이충무공전서』에 나오는 거북선 규격 64자 8치보다 약 7.4% 정도 작으므로, 높이도 같은 비율을 가지고 있었다고 가정한다면 「귀선중기」 거북선의 현판 높이는 7.4%를 줄인 6.95자가 된다. 결국 「귀선중기」 거북선의 2층 주갑판부터 개판까지의 높이는 전체 14자에서 현판 높이 6.95자를 제외한 7.05자가 된다. 이 높이 안에 2층 주갑판과 3층 상갑판이 들어가야 하므로, 거북선의 내부 구조는 완전한 3층이라기보다는 준3층이라고 표현하는 것이 적절하다. 『경기수영중기』는 거북선의 내부 장비와 장착물을 설명하면서 내부 구조를 하장 마루판과 중장판, 상장 부루판으로 구분하고 있다. 마루판이란 용어를 쓰지 않은 것으로 보아 상장 부루판은 개판을 지칭할 가능성이 매우 높다. 결국 하장 마루판이 2층 주갑판에 해당하고, 중장판이 3층 상갑판에 해당할 것이다. 하지만 중장판에 사용된 목재의 개수가 6립(piece)에 불과해 하장 마루판의 267립이나 상장 부루판의 167립에 비해 매우 적다. 『경기수영중기』는 사용 목재의 개수를 설명했을 뿐 구체적인 크기를 설명하지는 않았지만, 목재 구조물의 특성을 고려한다면 중장판 면적이 상장 부루판이나 하장 마루판에 비해 좁았을 개연성이 높다. 다시 말해 『경기수영중기』거북선의 내부 구조는 3층 상갑판 면적이 2층 주갑판에 비해 좁은 구조였던 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 「귀선중기」와 『경기수영중기』는 임진왜란 당시의 거북선 구조를 정확하게 반영한 사료가 아니라 조선 후기 거북선의 여러 양식 중 몇 가지 실례를 보여주는 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고「귀선중기」,『경기수영중기』의 설명 내용이 『이충무공전서』의 통제영 거북선 그림과 논리적으로 일치한다는 점에서 임진왜란 때의 거북선도 준3층 구조를 가진 군함이었을 가능성이 높다고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In domestic academia, there have been two opposing claims on the structure of the turtle ship invented by Yi Sun sin in the Imjin War. One is that the turtle ship(龜船) is a double-floor ship, the other a triple-floor ship. 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo(李忠武公全書)』 says that the turtle ship designed by Yi may have been similar to a Tongjeyeong(統制 營) turtle ship. 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo』 clearly illustrates that the Tongjeyeong turtle ship has open cannons Hole on the deck of the second floor and oars installed on the same floor. In addition, given that cannons hole are open on the roof cover, it appears that some kind of structure must have existed on the deck of the second floor to ensure people stand. However, it is estimated that the certain kind of structure was not a complete deck. Looking at the picture of the Tongjeyeong turtle ship, you will find that it is highly likely that the ship had a structure impossible for people to stand on the ship’s side because the shingle bends in a curved, lined form from the place where the third floor starts. Historical records that support such estimations are found in 「Guisun-junggi(龜船重記)」 and 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi (京畿水營重記)』. 「Guisun-junggi」 describes that the size of the turtle ship reaches 12pa[1pa is equal to 5 cheok] in length and 14 cheok(尺ㆍKorean foot) in height. In contrast, according to the size of the turtle ship recorded in 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo』, the height of the outside plating is 7.5 cheok. Thus, you can estimate that given that the turtle ship in 「Guisun-junggi」 is smaller 7.4% than that in 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo』 in length, the outside plating height of the turtle ship in 「Guisun-junggi」 is 6.95 cheok, reduced 7.4% than that in 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo』 in spite of the same height. Eventually, for the turtle ship in 「Guisun-junggi」, the total height from the second floor deck to the shingle in becomes 7.05 cheok. The second floor deck and the third floor deck must be installed in accordance with this height. Thus, it is proper to express that certainly the internal structure of the turtle ship was not a three-floor structure but then a semi-triple floor. 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi』 describes the internal structure of the turtle ship by dividing it into Hajangmarupan (bottom deck), a Jungjangpan (middle deck),and Sangjangburupan (top deck). However, the old book does not use the term “Marupan”(board). Accordingly, the Sangjangburupan may accurately refer to the roof cover of the turtle ship. After all, it is assuredly said that Hajangmarupan means the deck of the second floor and Jungjangpan the deck of the third floor. However, the number of timbers used on Jungjangpan is 6 rips(立ㆍ pieces), much less number, compared to the number of 267 rips for Hajangmarupan and 167 rips for Sangjangburupan. On the contrary, 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi』 does not present the exact number of timers used, but considering the characteristics of the timber structure, it is highly probable likely that Jungjangpan was narrower than Sangjangburupan or Hajangmarupan. In other words, it is estimated that the interior structure of the turtle ship in 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi』 was very narrow due to the two - floor deck instead of a three-floor deck. 「Guisun-junggi」 and 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi』 are not the historical records that show a structure of the turtle ship during the Imjin War, but these records illustrate some of several models as an example in the late Joseon Dynasty. This notwithstanding, there is a high possibility that the turtle ship during the Imjin War was a warship with a semi-triple floor structure in that the contents described in 「Guisun-junggi」 and 『Gyeonggi-Suyeong-junggi』are logically consistent with those Tongjeyeong turtle ship illustrations presented in 『Yi-Chungmugong-Jeonseo』.
