조선극장과 내청각에서 연행된 전통음악공연의 특징과 의의

국문 초록

조선극장은 1922년 11월 6일 연극공연과 영화흥행을 목적으로 개관한 극장이며, 내청각은 1924년 6월 1일 신축된 경성일보사내에 여러 공연과 행사 개최를 목적으로 마련된 다목적 공간이다. 두 공간은 설립 시기나 목적은 달랐지만 개관 초기부터 전통음악공연이 연행되면서 당시 전통음악공연의 주요 연행공간으로 자리잡아 갔다. 다른 공간들과는 달리 두 공간에서는 전통음악공연의 다양한 면모를 보여주었고, 1920년대 초부터 1930년대 초까지 전통음악이 연행될 수 있는 장소를 지속적으로 제공하였다. 이에 본고는 조선극장과 내청각에서 연행된 전통음악공연을 살펴보고 그 특징과 의의를 고찰하였다. 그 결과 조선극장과 내청각에서 연행된 대부분의 전통음악공연은 새로운 유형의 공연이거나 기존의 공연을 재구성한 공연으로, 전통음악공연의 차별화를 시도하고 전통음악공연이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하였다는 특징과 의의가 있었다. 본 연구를 계기로 아직 조명되지 못한 근대식 공간들과 그곳에서 연행되었던 전통음악공연에 대한 후학들의 관심과 연구가 활발히 이어지기를 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

The Chosun (Joseon) Theater was opened on November 6, 1922, for plays and movies. The Naecheong (Naech’ŏng) Pavilion (來靑閣) was a multipurpose space established on June 1, 1924, in the building of the Gyeongseong (Kyŏngsŏng) Ilbo (The Keijo Nippo) newspaper to hold a variety of performances and events. The two places were built in different periods for different purposes, but, from the beginning, both hosted traditional music performances and gradually positioned themselves as main halls for “traditional music” performances. From the early 1920s up until the early 1930s, these two halls recorded various aspects of “traditional music” performances through their continuous providing of space for performing “traditional music.” This study examines “traditional music” performances held in the Chosun Theater and the Naecheong Pavilion. It finds that most of the “traditional music” performances held in the two venues were either new types of performances or new arrangements of existing performances. Such contemporary performances were characteristic and meaningful because they differentiated themselves from traditional “traditional music” performances and suggested ways for “traditional music” performance to develop. I hope that this study will actively lead to expanded interest in and research on unexplored “modern” performance spaces for “traditional music” during the Japanese colonial era and to a heightened interest in the music itself.
