한ㆍ중 어휘상 유형에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 어휘상에 있어 어떠한 유용성으로 한국어는 Vendler(1967)가, 중국어는 Smith(1997)가 대표적으로 인용되는가를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 개별언어에 있어 어떤 유형의 어휘상 분류법이 대표적으로 논의되고 있는지 살펴보는 일은 해당 언어의 인식 세계의 상이점을 살펴보는 한 방식이 될 수 있기 때문에 큰 의미를 지닌다. 동사에 내재한 ‘시간적 자질’(temporal feature)들의 조합으로 동사를 분류하는 연구는 한국어와 중국어에서 개별적으로 연구되어 두 언어의 동사 분류체계에 차이를 보여 왔으며, 이러한 차이는 Vendler(1967)와 Smith(1997)로 대표된다. 본고에서 중점을 두어 검토한 내용은 한국어와 중국어의 어휘상 연구에서 대표적으로 인용되는 ‘Vendler(1967)와 Smith(1997)의 이론이다. 특히 이들 이론에서 공통적 동사 유형인 상태(states), 활동(activity), 성취(achievement), 완성(accomplishment)이 ‘한국어와 중국어에 어떻게 적용되었는가?’이다. 이러한 문제들과 관련하여 기존의 Vendler(1967)의 ‘동사의 종류’(species of verb)에서 이견이 있던 부분을 재조명하였다. 그 결과 같은 기준이 적용된 새로운 분류도를 제안하였다. 또한 Smith(1997)의 ‘상황유형’(situation types)이 중국어 어휘상 논의의 준거가 된 특징에 대해 한국어의 시각으로 고찰하여 단계상이 중국어 동사 분류에 유효하였음을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This study aims to consider the reasons why Vendler (1967) and Smith (1997) are cited as ‘lexical aspect’ in the Korean and Chinese languages, respectively. Looking into what are the mainstay of discussions over the lexical aspectual classification of different languages has an important significance in that it offers a way to examine differences in their perception systems. Individual studies have been conducted to classify verbs with combinations of their inherent temporal features in Korean and Chinese, and this has led to difference in the classification frameworks of verbs in the two languages, notably represented by Vendler (1967) and Smith (1997). The prime consideration of this study is for what merits the classification frameworks of the Korean and Chinese languages are represented by Vendler (1967) and Smith (1997), respectively. In this regard, the author revisited the disagreements on the species of verbs presented by Vendler (1967). As a result, this paper proposes new classification framework which applied same criteria. The author also examined, from the viewpoint of the Korean language, the features of the situations types presented by Smith (1997) that established this study as the reference for discussions over phases in the Chinese language and demonstrated that phases were effective in the classification of Chinese verbs.
