국문 초록

본고는 The Korean Repository에 실린 민간신앙 관련 기사를 살펴 본 것이다. The Korean Repository의 주요 집필진은 선교사들이다. 그들은 당시 대학을 졸업한 당대의 엘리트 집단이었다. 따라서 문명ㆍ개화ㆍ과학 등을 표방했던 당대지식인들의 눈으로 기록된 한국 민속을 살펴보는 것은 한국 민속학사에 있어서도 중요한 문제이다. 당대에 만들어진 미신이라는 인식과 틀은 일제강점기를 거치면서 더욱 고착화되고 현재까지도 유효하게 작용하고 있기 때문이다. 또한 당대에 기록된 한국에 대한 인식이 서방 세계에서 여전히 유효하다는 것도 하나의 이유이다. 본고에서는 민간신앙 관련 기사를 ‘무속ㆍ조상 숭배ㆍ귀신 신앙’으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 먼저 선교사들이 한국의 민간신앙을 ‘신앙이 아닌 타개해야할 인습’으로 봤다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히 무속신앙이 여기에 해당되었다. 다음으로 민간신앙의 대부분을 ‘우상숭배’로 봤다는 것이다. ‘우상숭배’의 핵심은 귀신신앙에 있다고 보았다. 조상숭배도 넓은 의미에서는 귀신신앙으로 파악하였다. 따라서 본고에서 살펴본 조상숭배는 모두 우상숭배에 해당되었다. 그러나 추후 조상에 대한 의례를 모두 우상 숭배로 치부할 수 없다는 생각들이 기독교에서도 일어났다. 조상숭배가 조상에 대한 예를 갖추는 효(孝)의 측면이 분명히 존재하기 때문이다. 그러나 무속과 결부된 조상 숭배는 예외이다. 이를 통해서도 선교사들이 민간신앙 중에서도 무속을 가장 문제시했던 이유를 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper investigated the articles related to folk beliefs in The Korean Repository. The main writers of The Korean Repository are missionaries. They were elite groups graduated from college at that time. Therefore, it is an important part of Korean folklore to investigate Korean folklore recorded by intellectuals well in terms of civilization, flowering, and science. The perception and framework of superstition that was created in the present day became more and more firmly established through the Japanese colonial period, and the perception is still influential to this day. It is also because the perceived record of Korea is still valid in the Western world. This paper investigated the articles related to folk beliefs in The Korean Repository. According to these articles, missionaries considered Korean folk beliefs as ‘A habit to change rather than faith’ and ‘idolatry’. This was especially true of the Shamanism. Next, most of the folk beliefs were recognized as ‘idolatry’. The core of ‘idolatry’ is related to the ghost faith. Ancestor worship was also identified as ghost faith in a broad sense. Therefore, all of the ancestor worship investigated in this article was idol worship. Later, however, opinions in Christianity appeared to suggest that rituals to ancestors may not be idolatrous. Because ancestor worship has an etiquette for ancestors. But ancestor worship associated with shamanism is an exception. Therefore, we can know why missionaries were most concerned about shamanism among folk beliefs.
