박완서 소설의 치매 서사와 가족 갈등 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 박완서의 소설 중, 「포말의 집」(1976), 「집 보기는 그렇게 끝났다」(1978), 「해산바가지」(1985), 「환각의 나비」(1995), 「후남아, 밥 먹어라」(2003) 등 치매를 다루고있는 작품을 중심으로 가족의 갈등과 균열, 치매 서사의 의미를 고찰한 글이다. 치매는 노인의 정체성과 노년의 삶에 큰 영향과 변화를 주는 질병으로, 예전에는 치매를 ‘노망’, ‘망령’으로 생각하며 어쩔 수 없는 노화의 과정이라 여겼다. 치매 환자의 대표적인 특징인 망각과 배회는 환자 본인뿐만 아니라 가족, 특히 간병을 맡은 가족구성원의일상을 균열시킨다. 환자가 가장 힘들겠지만 간병자가 받는 스트레스는 환자에게 되돌아가기 일쑤며 간병의 질을 떨어뜨리게 되고 심지어 학대로까지 이어지기도 한다. 가부장제 사회에서 치매 노인의 간병을 며느리나 딸인 여성이 전담을 하였다면, 현대에 이르러서는 변화를 맞이한다. 핵가족화와 여성들의 사회진출로 인해 며느리나 딸이 도맡았던 간병이 사실상 불가능하게 된 것이다. 또한 치매를 질병으로 인식하게 됨으로써 병원 등 공식적인 서비스를 이용하게 된 것도 그 원인이다. 박완서 소설에서 치매의 서사의 상징적 의미를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 망각으로 자신을 잃어버리기도 하지만 새로운 정체성과 만나는 지점으로 작용하고 있다. 둘째, 치매는 가족 갈등의 원인이자 화해의 매개체이기도 하다. 셋째, 암보다무서운 병이라는 치매 서사를 통해 우리를 죽음과 대면하게 하고 삶을 성찰할 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 요약컨대, 박완서의 치매 소설은 치매 환자의 삶과 혼란, 그를 둘러싼 가족의 심리를세밀하고 사실적으로 묘사하여 고령화 사회의 질병에 대한 사회적 관심과 대안을 모색하게 하였다.

영문 초록

In this paper, we examined family conflicts, cracks, and the meaning of dementia epic based on Park Wan-Seo’s novel that deals with dementia like “A Foram House”(1976), “That’s the end of the house”(1978), “Butterfly of Hallucination”(1995), “Hunam, have your meal”(2003). Dementia is a disease that greatly affects the identity and lives of the elderly, who used to think of it as “senile”, and considered it an inevitable process of aging. The characteristics of dementia patients, forgetting and hanging around, damage the daily lives of not only the patient, but also the family members responsible for caring. The stress of the caregiver was returned to the patient, causing poor quality care and even abuse. In a patriarchal society, the care of the elderly with dementia was dedicated to the daughter-in-law and daughter, while in modern times, the use of official services such as hospitals has come from the realization of nuclear families, the advance of women into society, and the recognition of dementia as diseases. The epic story of dementia in Park Wan-seo’s novel is a point where one loses oneself due to oblivion but meets a new identity. Second, Alzheimer’s is the cause of family conflicts and is also a means of reconciliation. Third, it gives us a chance to face death and reflect on our lives through its dementia epic. Park Wan-seo so detailed the lives and chaos of people with dementia and the psychology of family members surrounded by them, and led them to seek alternatives and social interests on diseases in aging society.
