국문 초록

본 연구는 계속 하여 발전하는 한국의 문화산업, 창조경제, 국가의 경계를 넘어 전개되는 문화 상품과 예술작품의 유통의 창작자들이 무엇에 추동되어 어떻게 그 작업을 영유해 나가 는지에 대한 관찰을 통해 현대 사회에서 중요한 반성들을 반추해 보고자 한다. 본 연구는 예술가라는 직업의 일차적 개념화와 더불어 복수의 직업을 지닌 예술가들의 삶의 방식에 주목 하여 제시하고 있는 여러 개념들에 대한 물음을 던져보고자 한다. 본고의 일차적 목표는 예술장에서 생산되고 소비되는 창조를 노동으로 조명하고자 함이다. 예술 관련 노동에 관한 연구들은 주로 ‘문화 산업(cultural industry)’라 불리는 산업 군에 관한 논의에 한정되어 있는 경향이 짙다. 더 나아가, ‘문화’라 불리는 개념에 집중되어 ‘예술’이라는 특수하고 자조적인 장에 대한 조명이 현대 한국의 문화 산업 논의에서는 많이 부족한 실정이다. 예술인에게 닥친 위기와 위험에 대해 왕왕 이야기하고, 정책을 세우고, 대안을 생각해보고자 한다지만, 정작이 ‘예술가’라는 범주 자체의 애매함에 다소 동어 반복적인 논의로 귀결되고 있는 실정이라할 수 있다. 고로, 본 연구에서는 누가 에술가 인가, 과연 어떤 작업이 예술 활동인가라는 다차적이고 복합적인 질문을 던지기보다, 예술활동가라 통용되는 이들이 어떠한 방식으로 현재의 상황, 혹은 예술이 맞이한 사회, 경제적 국면에 대해 어떠한 형과 태로 스스로를 재정의 해나가는가, 그 과정과, 과정에서 생겨나는 관계들을 재조명하고자 한다. 연구자들은 예술가 라는 직업이 ‘창조’라 불리는 신비화에 가까운 작업 이외에도, 어떠한 경험을 수반하고 또 어떠한 예술가의 일상적 전술과 생존을 위한 전략을 파생하는지 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

This empirical study attempts to shed light on why and how artists are motivated to create. According to the recent growing field of cultural industry or creative economy, cultural products and art products are trans-nationally circulated, resulting in the expansion of the industry. Locating artists within the realm of the art industry, the researchers have attempted to re-conceptualize the idea of “artists as laborers” and examine how artists perceive and define their creative labor, as the majority of aspiring artists survive by holding multiple jobs while working as studio artists. We can therefore see how the process of production and consumption of creation can be understood as labor. Previous studies that are pertinent to such an idea of art labor are somewhat restrained to a phenomenological interpretation of the creative industry. Moreover, in spite of the fact that we are living in a so-called “epochal crisis” of art, our society has given weight to creativity as a kind of ability that one can attain by hard work. The fact that creativity is seen as an ability implies that individuals must constantly train, educate, and prepare themselves to acquire a sense of stability in our fundamentally fluid society. In this context, however, the question of who the artists are, what values they bring to society, and how they continue as artists are topics that have not been given adequate attention. With the hope of expanding the rudimentary understanding of artists in our times, and in order to approach the ambivalent question of art, the researchers have examined artists and observed their daily strategies and tactics as artists and as social and economic beings.
