고려 현종대 강민첨의 생애와 군사활동

국문 초록

이 글은 고려 현종대 거란 및 여진과의 전쟁에서 활약한 은열공 강민첨의 생애와 군사활동에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 강민첨을 비롯한 여러 중견급 지휘관들이 대거란전쟁에서 크게 활약한 기록이 고려사 고려사절요 등에 제법 전하는데, 이에 대한 연구는 아직 미진한 편이다. 이에 문제의식을 갖고 대거란전쟁기에 강민첨의 군사활동이 전하는 기록을 중심으로 특히 2차및 6차 전쟁에 주목하여 검토하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결론에 이르게 되었다. 우선 강민첨은 2차 전쟁기에 서경성을 방어하는 전투에 큰 수훈을 세웠다. 당시 서경성 전투에 앞서 고려는 총지휘관이던 강조가 거란군에 포로로 잡히는 등 매우 열세적인 상황이었다. 그러나 강민첨을 중심으로 한 중견급 지휘관들은 군민의 마음을 다잡고 서경성 사수를 완수하였다. 이를 계기로 고려군은 전열을 정비하면서 반격의 기회를 확보할 수 있게 되었고, 결국 거란군은 회군을 결정하지 않을 수 없게 되었다. 강민첨은 6차 전쟁기 귀주전투에서 큰 역할을 수행하였다. 일반적으로 강감찬의 귀주대첩으로 널리 알려진 이 전투에서는 강민첨 역시 크게 활약하였다. 그는 매복기습전략과 수공전술, 공세 적인 추격전을 적극 전개하여 반령의 들판에서 거란군의 주력군을 모두 섬멸하였다. 강민첨의 분전에 힘입어 고려는 거란의 위협으로부터 벗어나 향후 100여 년간 평화를 유지할 수 있게 되었다. 또한 서북계의 요충지대인 강동 6주에 대한 지배권을 굳건히 함으로써 압록강 연안까지 영토를 확보할 수 있게 되었다.

영문 초록

This article deals with the life and military activities of Kang Min-chum who fought in the Khitan and Jurchen wars during the times of king Hyeonjong of Koryo. In History of Koryo and Essentials of Koryo History, there are many records of veteran commanders, including Kang himself, achieving great valors in the Khitan wars. However, such documentations still did not deserve much scholarly attention, which was the motive for this paper which specially focused on second and sixth wars centering around Kang’s military activities during the Khitan wars. The conclusion has been reached as follows. First of all, Kang Min-chum played a major role in defending Seogyeong fortress during the second Khitan war. Seogyeong was in crisis as Kang Jo, Koryo’s supreme commander, was captured as prisoner by the Khitans. But Kang and veteran commanders organized the people and accomplished their mission in defending the city against the Khitans. This achievement gave a momentum as Koryo forces reshuffled internally and set for counterattack, which forced the Khitan army to retreat. Kang Min-chum was also a game changer in the battle of Guiju during the sixth Khitan war. This battle is more famously known as Kang Gam-chan’s great battle of Guiju, but Kang Min-chum took a major role in turning the tide. Kang Min-chum masterfully employed the military art of ambush, sudden attack, inundation tactics, and offensive chase to ultimately annihilating Khitan main troops on the plains of Bhanryeong. Thanks to Kang Min-chum’s struggle, Koryo freed itself from Khitan threat and enjoyed an era of peace for the next 100 years. It also strengthened the ruling of Six Garrison Settlements East of the River, which was the strategic area in northwestern frontier, thereby securing the territory to the banks of Yalu river.
