해외 박물관 경영 연구의 동향 분석

국문 초록

이 글은 최근 9년 동안 주요 국제 학술지에 실린 박물관 경영 연구 논문을 분석하여 박물관 경영 연구의 국제적인 동향을 파악하는데 목적이 있다. 『Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society』와 『International Journal of Arts Management』, 『Museum Management and Curatorship』의 세 학술지에 2000년부터 2008년까지 게재된 박물관경영 관련 연구 논문 총 117편을 연구의 주제, 연구자의 배경, 연구 방법을 기준으로 분류하고 주요 경향을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 박물관 경영 연구는 주제 면에서 마케팅에 대한 논문이 가장 많았으며, 변화하는 환경에서 박물관의 정체성과 사회적 역할을 고찰한 논문도 상당한 비중을 차지했다. 연구자의 배경은 대학의 교수진이 대다수였으며, 주로 북미와 서유럽, 호주에서 활동하고 있었다. 이들의 학문적 배경은 경영학 관련 전공이 가장 많았으며, 박물관학, 예술경영, 인문사회학 전공자가 그 다음으로 많은 것으로 나타났다. 이 외에도 다양한 학문 영역에서 박물관 경영 연구 논문이 생산되고 있었다. 연구 방법으로는 사례연구와 비서술적 논문이 가장 많았으며, 양적ㆍ질적 방법을 혼합한 연구도 두드러졌다. 전반적으로 실증적 성격의 연구방법이 선호되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 논문에서는 한국의 박물관 경영 연구가 질적, 양적으로 도약하기 위해 참고할 수 있는 시사점과 나아갈 방향을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This paper purports to examine current trends in international museum management research, detail the topical and methodological perspectives that are emerging, and reflects on how these findings could hind implications for enhancing quality and quantity of academic research on museum management in Korea. The research articles published from 2000 to 2008 in 3 major international journals(The Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society, International Journal of Arts Management, and Museum Management and Curatorship) dealing with museum management issues are investigated. The results of the study are analyzed in three aspects. First, in regard to the topic, marketing was the most prominent subject in museum management research. Second, the study shows that majority of the researchers are from the universities in North American and European countries. Finally, in terms of the research methods, the articles frequently utilize case study and non-numerical essay type research methods. Based on these examinations of current trends in international museum management research, the study suggests implications for Korean academics and museum professionals.
