The paper will examine the relationship between the characteristics of culture consumer and audience development. In order to develop audience systematically, which is a key factor of arts management, first of all, the cultural demand and activity of the people need to be identified in terms of the demographic characteristics such as age, sex, income, education and residential area. For this reason, the survey reports and statistics on the cultural life of the people will be reexamined. In particular, the data established public organizations such as the Bank of Korea, the Korean National Statistics Office and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is analyzed.
As a result, it can be said that cultural demand has been increased and diversified in line with the economic growth. In particular, this trend is caused by the improvement in education level as well as the increase of income. On the other hand, the quantity and quality of cultural life of the people has been different according to social class. In addition, there is big gap between urban area and rural area. Some factors such as age, sex and education has significantly affected the cultural activities of the people.
In conclusion, the paper points out that the audience development strategy should consider the characteristics of cultural consumer. In doing so, the target marketing system according to the characteristics of cultural consumer should be established. The educational programme for youth people, the disabled people and old people also should be reinforced. Furthermore, cultural facilities should make an effort to develop the creative programing system for audience development.
