It seems that Korean artists are currently going through some difficulties in many respects. While the art marker goes into a period of gradually flourishing, with large-scale exhibitions put into practice and artistic discourse activated, Korean art scene seems to suffer hardships and give artists a gloomy perspective. This is why some main bodies of Korean art scene such as art museums, galleries, artists, art buyers and curators are all perplexed in doing their right roles. In a closeted framework they are not able to communicate properly. There is growing unrest among art museums and galleries, and therefore they become interested in more lucrative business. Suffering from financial difficulties, artists are also increasingly denied access to luxurious galleries and museums and deprived of opportunities to present their works to more exhibitions. Given little authority to lead art projects, museum and gallery curators have rare chance to organize and initiate art shows. Furthermore, there is lack of criticism in Korean art world by excluding art critics and theoreticians from the mainstream of the art market. As a result, it causes a structural problem in which an artwork worth a high appraisal has a low degree of acknowledgement. For artists, making a living by selling their work becomes gradually hard under such circumstances. Due to the increase of art colleges and art major students since the 1990s, the matter of survival has been imperative for artists. The art market has been steadily enlarged bur their life has not been improved at all, because many art buyers, collectors and art lovers rely heavily on particular sensibilities and tend to keep up with fads and trends. The rest of artists who demonstrates a wide variety of art trends has been relatively alienated and falls into hardships. Even if there have been a number of grand-scale, high-profile exhibitions, they have failed to boost up interests in demanding more artworks. Almost all art-related societies and associations are extremely disinterested in pointing our and addressing such matters. Korean art scene including art critics and theoreticians as a whole remains ignorant in such real, practical problem of Korean artists. What is far more serious is that artists themselves amid the changes brought about in the world have failed to prove their existence through their distinctive, unique art and innovative interpretations. Circumstances many artists confront are by no means favorable for them. Their works are not properly assessed and encouraged under this situation. In closing, a predicament Korean artists currently face is closely associated with the entangled structural problem of Korean art world.
