저시력 아동 읽기의 어려움과 대처 기술에 관한 질적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 저시력 아동이 읽기에서 경험하는 어려움과 그를 극복하기 위하여 개발하는 대처 기술에 대하여 탐색하고, 이를 바탕으로 저시력 아동의 읽기 향상을 위한 교육적 지원 방안을 모색하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 저시력 아동을 대상으로 면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 저시력 아동은 읽기에 있어 개인 내적으로 신체적 어려움, 시각장애의 특성으로 인한 어려움, 읽기 과정에서의 어려움을 경험하는 것으로 분석되었다. 특히 진행성 장애를 갖는 경우 심리적인 어려움을 호소하였다. 개인 외적으로 확대 매체 및 확대 자료 활용의 어려움, 교재 및 교구의 부족, 주변인의 시각장애 관련 인식 및 정보 부족, 교육기관 및 전문 인력의 부족을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 조기에 문자를 습득하고, 다양한 읽기 경험을 축적하며, 읽기 학습전략을 개발하고, 부수적 문자매체를 병행 활용하는 등의 개인적 노력과 부모 및 교사의 지원과 같은 주변의 지원이라는 대처기술을 개발하여 이를 극복하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 시각장애 읽기 교육을 위한 교육 인프라 구축의 필요성을 제안하며, 향후 이를 위한 체제적인 학문적 접근을 제언하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore difficulties and coping techniques for reading of children with low vision and, through this, to seek the ways for supporting the children with low vision to improve their reading ability. Therefore, this study addresses the following research questions：First, What is the difficulties in reading of children with low vision? Second, What is the coping techniques in reading of children with low vision to overcome the difficulties in reading? The total number of participants of this study is 6, and all of them are 4th to 6th grade elementary school students with low vision. Moreover, all of them are attending special schools for the blind in Metropolitan area in Republic of Korea. Interviews of 6 children were implemented and each case are analyzed through qualitative analytical methods. The results of the study are as follows: 1) There are personal factor for difficulties in reading; Physical difficulties, difficulties from low vision, and difficulties during the reading process. Especially, if the children has a progressive disease, they have psychological problems. 2) There are external factor for difficulties in reading; Difficulties of using magnifier and large print, difficulties of shortage for material and textbooks, and difficulties of educational institute and professional manpower. On the other hand, 3) There are personal coping techniques for these difficulties; Acquiring early literacy skills, accumulating diverse reading related experiences, developing learning strategies for the reading, and using secondary text media, such as braille and sound. 4) There are supports from parents, teachers, and so on. This study suggests the necessity of establishing educational systems for reading education of children with low vision, and academic ways for this.
