忠武公의 戰死에 대한 文獻的 考察

국문 초록

충무공 이순신장군은 1598년 11월 19일 새벽2시 노량해전에서 왜적의 탄환을 맞고 전사(戰死)하였다. 이러한 사실은 여러 문헌 기록에서 확인되고, 기정사실 화된 설로 전해져왔다. 그런데 일각에서는 선조와의 갈등과 주변적 상황으로 인해 자살한 것이라고 주장하였다. 조선 후기 이민서의 ‘김장군전’에 “이순신장군이 한창 싸울 때 면주(免冑, 투구를 벗다)하고 죽었다”는 기록이 있는데, 1993년 ‘창작과 비평’이란 계간지에 “면주(免冑)”가 “갑옷을 벗고 죽었다”고 해석되어 실린 것이 문제의 발단이 되었다. “면주(免冑)”는『춘추좌씨전』의 선진(先軫)이 전사한 고사에서 나온 말인데, 이는 임금에게 송구함을 느껴 자신을 자책하는 마음으로 투구를 벗고 적진에 뛰어들어 결사적으로 싸우다가 전사한 것이다. 이순신의 죽음에 대한 문헌을 보면, 적을 섬멸하여 임금에게 보답하고자 하고, 화(禍)가 미칠 것을 염려한 까닭에 면주(免冑)하여 전사하였다고 하였다. 선진과 이순신은 각기 나름대로의 동기의식을 갖고 있었기 때문에 후대의 평자가 면주(免冑)란 말로 최후의 임전(臨 戰)상황을 설명한 것이다. 이순신의 전사 사실은 여러 문헌에서 확인되는데, 신경의『재조번방지』, 조경남의『난중잡록』, 이항복의『백사집』, 유몽인의『야승』,『연려실기술』, 『대사편년』,『해동신감』등에서 확인할 수 있다. 조선 정조임금은『충무공전 서』를 간행하면서 충무공의 공덕을 찬양하였고, 송시열은 그의 중흥의 업은 고금(古今)에 빛난다고 하며 천도(遷都)의 공을 세운 중국황제보다 더 훌륭하다고 하였다. 그후 1892년 이순신의 평전연구가 일본인 시산상칙(柴山尙則)에 의해 본격적으로 시작되었고, 1908년 신채호도 심층적인 평전연구를 하였다. 이처럼 충무공에 대한 관심과 연구는 고금을 막론하고 끊이지 않았는데, 모두가 전사사 실에 대해서는 일맥상통한 관점이었다. 따라서 자살설이란 문헌에 대한 잘못된 이해에서 나온 무근지설임을 거듭 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

General Chungmugong Yi Sun Sin died in battle after being shot by Japanese invaders at the Noryang Naval Engagement at 2am, November 19, 1598. This has been confirmed in various literatures and handed down as an established fact. However, some hinted that he had committed suicide due to a conflict with King Seonjo and a circumferential situation. There is a record that “General Yi Sun Sin died by taking off his helmet (Myeonju) at the peak of the fight” in General Kim-jeon by Yi Min-Seo in the later Joseon period, and this was interpreted that “he died by taking off his armor” in a quarterly magazine called “Creation and Criticism” in 1993, which became the origin of the issue. “Myeonju(免冑)” originated from a historic story about Seonjin in『Chunchu Jwassi-jeon』in which he died in a battle. He died during fighting at the risk of his life after rushing into the enemy camp after taking off his helmet because he felt sorry for the King and blamed himself for the situation. A review of literatures about the death of Yi Sun Sin reveals that he died in the battle by taking off his helmet to requite the King by annihilating the enemy and that he was in fear that he would meet with a disaster. Since Seon Jin and Yi Sun Sin had the awareness of their motivations, a critic of the later period explained the last battle situation with the word Myeonju.Yi Sun Sin’s death in the battle has been confirmed in many pieces of literature which include 『Jaejobeonbangji』of Sin Gyeong, 『Nanjungjamnok』of Jo Gyeong-Nam, 『Baeksajip』of Yi Hang-Bok, 『Yaseong』of Yu Mong-In, 『Yeolleosilgisul』,『Daesapyeonnyeon』, and『Haedongsingam』. King Jeongjo of the Joseon period praised the merit and virtue of Chungmugong in publishing 『Chungmugongjeonseo』and Song Si-Yeol said that the restoration achieved by him shone throughout the ages, and he is more respectable than the Chinese emperor who established the merits of transferring the capital. Since then, full-scale research into Yi Sun Sin’s critical biography was begun by a Japanese researcher, Sisansangchik, in 1892, and Sin Chae- Ho conducted in-depth research into the critical biography in 1908. Likewise, there have been a continued interest in and research into the historical Chungmugong, and all literatures shared the same conclusion that he died in the battle. Therefore, it was confirmed once again that the suicide rumor is groundless, coming from an incorrect understanding of the various literatures.
