雷黙 處英의 생애와 불교사적 위상

국문 초록

뇌묵 처영은 조선 중기를 대표하는 의승장이자 고승으로서 너무도 뚜렷한 위상을 지니고 있다. 하지만, 안타깝게도 우리는 그의 생몰연도에 관한 정보조차 갖고 있지 못하다. 처영과 관계된 기존 학계의 연구성과 역시 초라하다는 표현이 어울릴 정도이다. 이 논문은 이러한 문제점을 인식하면서 처영의 생애와 그가 지니고 있는 불교 사적 위상을 나름대로 살펴보고자 하는 목적을 지니고 작성되었다. 본문에서는 먼저 금산사지, 亂中雜錄 등에 전하는 각종 자료를 종합하여 처영의 행적을 살펴보았으며, 그의 의승활동과 관계된 내용을 중점적으로 검토해보았다. 처영은 임진왜란 3대 대첩 가운데 하나로 평가되는 행주대첩을 승리로 이끌었으며, 행주대첩 이후에도 蛟龍山城을 수축하는 등 많은 전공을 세웠다. 그 결과 그의 영정에는 ‘세상을 도운 존자(佑世尊者)’라는 존호가 명기되어 있기도 하다. 처영은 이른바 서산대사의 4대문파를 열어간 門長에 속하지는 못하 였다. 하지만 그는 사명대사와 함께 서산대사의 2대제자로 폭넓게 인식되고 있었으며, 이같은 사실은 여러 자료를 통해 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

At first glance, the status of Noemuk Cheoyeong in the Buddhist history is apparently solid, as a famous general of monk soldiers and a high monk during the middle Joseon dynasty. However, the scholars have even not secured any information on the years of his birth and death. Also, it is hard to find previous works related to Cheoyeong. Recognizing the scarcity of research as a problem, this study aims at understanding the life of Cheoyeong and his status in the Buddhist history. This paper first surveyed various kinds of records including the Chronicle of Geumsansa Temple (金山寺誌) and Nanjung Japnok (亂中雜錄) to investigate the life of Cheoyeong, especially concerning the matters related to his activities as a general of monk soldiers. Cheoyeong led to victory the Siege of Haengju, which was one of the three most significant battles of the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592. He rendered military merits even after the battle, starting the construction of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress (蛟 龍山城). As a result of his distinguished military service, the commemorative portrait of him after the death included a eulogistic title ‘Venerable Monk who Helped the World (佑世 尊者).’ Cheoyeong was not included as one of the so-called Mun Leaders (門長) who founded the four major sects that followed the teachings of Seosan the Great Zen Master.However, he has been widely recognized as one of the two significant disciples of Seosan, together with Samyeong the Zen Master. This study shows this as a fact recorded in various historical data.
