범본 금강경에 나타나는 vastu에 대하여

국문 초록

vastu라는 말은 유가행파의 문헌에서는 상당히 중요하게 사용된 용어이다. 곧 유가행파의 사상적 입장을 나타내는 유가사지론이나 불교철학의 정점을 보여주는 다르마키르티의 양평석에서도 이 vastu는 대상에 대한 인식을 가능케 하는 핵심개념으로 사용되고 있다. 다시 말해 우리들이 외계의 대상을 인식하는 것은 존재하는 사물들이 가지는 각각의 vastu에 의한 것이라 할 수 있다. 비록 외경 대상이 찰나적으로 생멸한다고 하더라도 궁극적인 승의로서 실재하는 각각의 vastu의 힘에 의해 대상인식이 가능하다는 것이다. 이렇게 유가행파에서 중요한 의미를 갖고 철학적 개념으로 사용된 vastu 가 반야경전에서도 등장하고 있고, 특히 여러 반야경전들 가운데 후대의 영향력이 컸다고 생각되는 금강경에서도 vastu의 용어는 나타나고 있다. 하지만 금강경에서는 유가행파에서 보듯 긍정적인 개념으로서 사용되고 있는 것이 아니라 집착해서는 안되는 부정적인 의미의 용어로서 나타나고 있다. 곧 vastu에 머물러서는 안된다거나 vastu에 집착해서는 안된다는 의미로서 무집착, 무소득의 공성의 의미를 강조하는 개념으로 등장한다. 그리고 이 vastu와 더불어 외계 대상 일반을 가리키는 법(法)이라는 말도 함께 사용되어 vastu와 동일하게 집착해서는 안되는 의미로 사용하고 있다. 이렇게 집착의 대상으로서 부정적으로 사용되는 vastu가 유가행파에서 철학적 의미를 갖는 중요한 개념으로서 긍정적으로 수용된 것은 어떤 의미를 갖는 것일까. 그것은 무집착, 무소득의 입장에서 일체의 개념적 분별을 떠날 것을 강조하는 금강경의 입장에 대해 적어도 유가행파는 vastu 에 대해긍정적인 입장에서 의미를 규명하고 적극적으로 해명하려고 하였던 것이라 생각된다. 이것은 어떤 의미에서는 반야경의 입장에 대해 유가행파로서는 다른 입장을 가지고 대응하고자 한 의도도 있었던 것이라 생각된다. 따라서 금강경에서의 vastu에 대한 입장은 후대 유가행파가 vastu를 긍정적이고 적극적으로 해명케 하는 하나의 계기가 되었던 것이라고도 생각된다.

영문 초록

The word vastu is a term that has been used vital in the literature of the Yogācāra. This vastu is also used as a key concept to enable recognition of the object in Yogācārabhūmi, which represents the ideological position of the Yogācāra, and in Dharmakīrti’s P ramāṇavārttika, which shows the peak of Buddhist philosophy. In other words, our recognition of the external object can be attributed to each vastu of the existing objects. Even if the external object is instantly alive, it can be recognized by the force of each vastu as the ultimate level. In this way, vastu, which is used as a philosophical concept with an important meaning in the Yogācāra, also appears in the P rajñāpāramita literatures. Especially in the Vajracchedikā Sutra, which is believed to have been influential in many P rajñāpāramita literatures, the term vastu appears. However, in the Vajracchedikā Sutra, it is not used as a positive concept as seen from the Yogācāra, but it appears as a term of negative meaning that should not be obsessed. It soon emerges as a notion that emphasizes the meaning of emptiness, meaning that it should not attach in vastu or obsessed with vastu. In addition to this vastu, the term dharma refers to the general meaning of external things, which is used in the sense that it should not be attached with dharma in the Vajracchedikā Sutra. The vastu, which is negatively used as an object of obsession in the Vajracchedikā Sutra, is considered as an important concept that has a philosophical meaning in the Yogācāra. It is thought that, at least for the position of the Vajracchedikā Sutra, which emphasizes the departure of all conceptual discernment from the standpoint of no-obsession and no-attachment, at least for the Yogācāra, vastu was positive in explaining and positively explaining the meaning. In this sense, it is thought that there is also intention to respond to the position of the Vajracchedikā Sutra with a different position as the Yogācāra movement. Therefore, the position of vastu in the Vajracchedikā Sutra is considered to be the moment for the Yogācāra to clarify vastu positively.
