In-Country Language Immersion and the Development of Korean Language Learners’ Intercultural Competence

국문 초록

외국어교육은 학습자의 상이문화간 능력을 개발하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 일반적으로 학습자들이 대상 언어 국가에서 외국어 교육과정 연장선으로 교실밖 활동으로 구성된 것이 몰입교육이다. 몰입 교육은 학습자들에게 대상 문화를 직접 체험할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 측면에서 상이문화간 능력을 개발하는데 크게 기여한다고 할 수 있다. 즉 몰입 교육은 학 습자들에게 대상 국가의 사회문화 관습을 체험하고 발견할 수 있도록하는 기회를 제시한다는 점이 중요하다. 학습자들은 대상국가의 사회관습을 단지 관찰하는 관찰자의 역할만으로 그치는 것이 아니라 그 사회구성인들과 소통하면서 사회의 일원으로 될 수 있는 것이다. 본고에서 단기 몰입교육이 외국어로 한국어를 배우는 학습자들의 상이문화간 능 력 개발에 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지에 초점을 두고 있다. 이 연구 는 양적, 질적 데이터를 가지고 조사했다. 자료는 학습자들이 몰입 교육 프로그램을 참여하기 전과 후로 실시한 설문 조사, 몰입교육 프로그램에 참가한 학습자들이 쓴 일지, 학습자와의 인터뷰, 연구자자의 몰입 교육 수업 참관 일지 및 몰입교육 프로그램의 활동과 관련된 전반적인 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 모든 연구 자료는 Byram (1997)의 상이문화간 숙달도 모델, Lave and Wenger (1991)의 상황학습이론(SLT)와 합법적인 주변인으로 공동체 참여 개념 (LPP)을 기반으로 분석되었다. 분석을 통해 단기 몰입교육이 학습자들의 문화인식과 상이문화간 능력을 배양할수 있도록 하는 지식, 태도, 기술개발에 도움이 된다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 이런 능력 개발은 학습자들이 대상 사회속에서도 주변인의 역할을 잘 할 수 있도록 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 기존 구성원들과 소 통을 하고 공동체에 일원으로 참여하고자 하는 학습자의 동기와 의지에 따라 결과는 달라질 수 있다는 점 역시 간과할 수 없을 것이다.

영문 초록

International Journal of Korean Language Education 3(2), 1-37. Foreign language education can play a pivotal role in the development of one’s intercultural competence. In-country language immersion, a common out-of-class component and extension of the foreign language curriculum, can make a telling contribution in this respect, as it takes learners to the target language country for a first-hand experience of its culture. It affords learners opportunities to explore and discover aspects of the country’s sociocultural practices. In fact, learners will be put in the position not only to observe these practices, but also to partake in them and to interact with members of the target language community. This article focuses on a study of the impact of short-term in-country language immersion on the intercultural development of learners of Korean as a foreign language. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through pre-/post-immersion questionnaires, journals, interviews, lesson and activity observations, and document inspection. The data were analysed based mainly on Byram’s (1997) model of intercultural competence, and Lave and Wenger’s (1991) Situated Learning Theory and notion of legitimate peripheral participation. The study arrived at the finding that short-term in-country immersion can benefit learners in the development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills for the cultivation of critical cultural awareness and intercultural competence. Such development is often precipitated by learners’ legitimate peripheral participation in the target language community, but is dependent on their motivation and willingness to take up such opportunities for interaction and participation.
