국문 초록

세계문학의 시대가 다시 도래하고 있다고 한다. 하지만 세계문학이 구체적 실체로서의 문학텍스트들을 가리키는 것인지, 이론적 구성물로서의 세계문학이라는 관념을 가리키는 것인지, 아니면 비평적 실천으로서의 세계문학을 가리키는 것인지 아직 그 정의는 명확하지 않다. 하지만 이런 불명확성 때문에 세계문학은 다양한 문학이론가들이 비평적으로 개입할 수 있는 문학적 공론장의 역할을 하고 있다. 이 글은 그동안 세계문학을 주도해온 모레티와 카자노바의 체계론적 세계문학을 비판 하면서 그것과는 결을 달리하는 세계문학론들을 비판적으로 소개하고 검토하고자 한다. 이 입장을 제기한 카디르, 헤이어트, 치아 등은 그 정치적 입장에서는 차이가 있지만 세계문학론에 대한 몇 가지 공통적 인식을 보이고 있다. 그 가장 두드러진 특징은 문학과 세계에 관한 새로운 관심, 즉 세계/문학 사이의 긴장에 대한 첨예한 인식을 드러낸 데 있다. 이들은 세계문학을 하나의 단어로 당연시하기보다는 세계/ 문학의 간극 속에 문학의 존재론적 문제, 즉 문학의 세계 형성이나 세계성의 문제 가 내재해있음을 강조한다. 모레티와 카자노바의 세계문학론이 문학텍스트의 ‘위’ 에서 작동하는 체계에 집중함으로써 정착 문학텍스트 ‘내’의 세계(성)의 문제를도 외시했고, 세계문학의 이해에서 ‘지구화’ 과정을 당연하게 전제함으로써 문학의 세 계구성의 문제를 제대로 다루지 못했다는 것이다. 이들은 그 대안으로 텍스트 속에 존재하는 세계성의 문제를 탐구함으로써 세계문학의 존재론적 질문을 제기한다. 하지만 이들은 체계론에 대한 지나친 비판과 반발로 인해 오히려 그들이 탐구하고자 한 존재론적 탐구의 설득력을 일부 잃기도 한다. 중요한 것은 세계문학의 체계론과 존재론이 서로를 전제하고 보완한다는 점을 인식하는 작업이다.

영문 초록

It is said that the age of world literature arises once again. The definition of world literature is, however, still unclear whether it refers to world literature as a concrete substance, as a theoretical construct, or as a critical practice. But this ambiguity makes world literature a public sphere of literary studies in which a number of literary scholars can intervene with their own critical perspectives and positions. This paper is to critically introduce and examine recent theories of world literature that are critical of Franco Moretti and Pascale Casanova’s views of world literature as a socioeconomic entity. Such scholars as Djelal Kadir, Eric Hayot, and Pheng Cheah suggest the ontological and ethical view of world literature. Even if different in theoretical and political positions, they share some characteristics of world literature. One of the important characteristics is that they are interested in the relationship between literature and the world and try to show an acute recognition of its tension. They don’t take for grated ‘world literature’ as a single name but introduce tension between literature and the world in order to emphasize that the world-forming and worldling are already immanent in literature. According to their criticism, Moretti and Casanova’s theory of world literature tends to dismiss the world(liness) within literary texts by exclusively focusing upon the socioeconomic system of world literature operating ‘above’ the texts. Moreover, it don’t deal with the issue of the world-forming of literature against globalization because it presupposes globalization as the absolute horizon for world literature. Kadir, Hayot, and Chea’s view try to suggest the ontological vision of world literature as an alternative by pursuing for the worldliness as essential to world literature. But because of their overexpansion of world literature and reactive response to the systematic view of world literature, they tend to lose the plausibility of the ontological pursuit of world literature. Consequently, what is important is to understand how the systematic view and the ontological view of world literature interact and complement each other.
