국문 초록

이 논문은 원효의 중기 저작인 이장의 의 <현료문>에 나타난 저작상의 특징을 탐구한 것이다. 이장의는 <은밀문>에 의해 번뇌에 대한 기신론의 사상적 관점을 보여주고자 하며, <현밀문>에의해서는 유가론 등에 나타난 초기유식의 번뇌설을 보여준다. 이논문이 <은밀문>의 설명보다 <현료문>에 나타난 원효의 이해에 보다 더 주목하는 이유는 그의 설명이 현장 문하의 학승들에 의해 편찬된 해설서보다 시기적으로 앞선, 현장 역서에 나타난 신유식 사상에 대한 최초의 반응이라는 점에 있다. 본고는 이들 개소의 연구를 통해 원효가 현장 문하의 해석에 의존하지 않고 유가론 등의 신역 유식문헌에 대한 독자적 탐구를 통해 인도유식사상을 이해하고 정리하고자 시도했던 사상가였다는 점을 보여주려는 것이며, 이를 위해 그의 독자적 해석의 특징을 다른 주석서와 비교해서 제시하고자 했다.

영문 초록

Ijangui, Meaning of the two Hindrances, is an independent work of Wŏnhyo on the system of Hindrances, which was schematized in the Yogācāra texts into two kinds: Hindrance of the defilements (kleśāvaraṇa) and hindrance consisting in the knowable objects (jñeyāvaraṇa). One of the distinguishing features of Ijangui lies in the interpretation that these two hindrances are subsumed into the two hermeneutical levels, which represent each other the exoteric level (顯了門) and esoteric level (隱密門) of interpretation of Buddhist thought. For Wŏnhyo, the former represents typical interpretation of the defilements in the indian Yogācāra works, such as the Yogācārabhūmi, and the latter in the Tathāgatagarbha thought, such as Śrīmalasūtra and the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna. In this paper, I focus on the explanation of the exoteric interpretation in order to demonstrate Wŏnhyo’s independent, systematic understanding of the Yogācāra ideas from that of Zuanzang school, particularly on the theme of two hindrances. Judged from the date of its composition around 660, the date derived from the composition of his authentic commentarial works on the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (大乘起信論), namely, 大乘起信論別記and 大乘起信論疏, we can safely say that it precedes he most influential commentaries in the Zuanzang school. If my understanding is correct, then Ijangui should be evaluated as the earliest systematic response in the East Asian Buddhism to Zuanzang’s voluminous translation of Yogācāra texts.
