僧肇選『注維摩詰經』에 나타난 方便의 理解

국문 초록

본고에서는 지금까지 승조 選주유마힐경에 나타나 있는 ‘보살의 방편사상’과 관련하여, 佛道品의 “智度, 菩薩母, 方便, 以為父.”와問疾品의 “慧·方便의 有無와 縛·解의 關係”에 대한 ‘라집’과 승조의주해를 비교 고찰하여 보았다. 그럼에 있어 방편과 지혜의 의미 규정과 관계성에 유의하여 살펴보았다. ‘라집’은 인도의 전통 속에 머물러 있는 가운데, 여래지·불지와 보살의 無生忍(無生慧), 체(智度-어머니)와 用(方便-아버지), 소승의 自利적 방편과 대승의 利他적 방편, 세간의 법(有相의 慧)과 출세간의법(無相의 慧) 등에서 主從또는 上下관계의 原理가 주요하게 적용되고 있다. 그런 한편 해탈의 경계로서 칠주 이상(출세간의 법)과 육주 이하(세간의 법)로서 구분하지만, 육주 이하와 신학 보살에게도 세간의 법을 적용하여 해탈의 길을 열어 놓고 있다는 점은 특이하다. 그런 가운데 대승의 불법으로써 방편력과 신통력을 주요하게 제안하고 있으며, 인도 龍樹의 十住毘婆沙論의 難行道와 중도 사상도 강하게 계승하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 반면 승조는 지혜(內-어머니)와 권도(外-아버지)를 마음의 內外的인 平等構圖로 잡아가는 가운데, 부처와 보살을 구분하지 않고 모두 대승의 과업을 수행하기 위한 동행자로 보고 있다. 그리고 권도인漚和(아버지)와 般若인 지혜(어머니) 역시 相依또는 相卽의 관계로서 상호 필요한 평등구조를 기획하고 있다. 특히 승조는 소승적 二乘의 수행 체계를 해탈의 경계에서 제외하고 있는 한편, 보살과 중생의 同時·同行的인 대승적 해탈의 길을 모색하고 있다. 그리고 六住이하의 보살은 有相의 행을 가짐으로 혜는 있으나 교방편이 없음으로 결박에 머무르고, 七住이상의 보살은 無相의 行을 가짐으로 혜행과 방편행이 구족하여 해탈에 머무를 수 있다. 그런데 六住이하의 보살에 대한 해탈 여부에 대해서는 특별한 언급이 없는 것으로 파악되고 있다.

영문 초록

The extant Seungjo s 10-volumeCommentary on the Vimalakīrti Sutra(38 books) is the combination by a later-period scholar of single commentaries of scholars such as Gumanajip(344-413), Seungjo(384-414), and Chukdosaeng(?-434), Chukdoyung(?-?), who lived in the 4th to 5th centuries. The tome is the oldest commentary on the Vimalakirti Sutra, which later deeply influenced the Chinese Buddhism of Sanlun Learning and Tiāntāi Learning. In this regard, Seungjo proposes his position of thought to unify Buddha and the Great Bodhisattva s Way of Unimaginableness and Liberation, the Principle of Confucian Changes of Zhou, namely, the opening of the new civilization,and the Taoist truth of dim the radiance and mingle with the dust. Yet, he raises the two gates of means (power) and wisdom as the foundation of achieving the unimaginableness realm. Gumarajip names Buddha and Tathāgata s wisdom(wisdom, 10 Paramitas wisdom) as the Buddhist wisdom and Tathāgata wisdom, while naming wisdom of Bodhisattva as patience of non-production or wisdom of non-production (panna of 6 Paramitas), dualizing the thought. Meanwhile, Seungjo bases the numerous practices of ‘Vimalakīrti Sutra’on right(virtue, expedient means) and wisdom (panna of 6 Paramitas), regarding them as the master. He regards both Buddha and Bodhisattva as wisdom, the mother, and as the right, the father, and insists on achieving the Great Bodhisattva embracing First attain enlightenment through cultivation, then save all beings. In the meantime, Gumanajip sees the 7th-stageof- abiding or higher-ranking Bodhisattva as having wisdom of no-form, and bases the gates of wisdom and means on supramundane teachings, while seeing under 7th-stageof- abidingBodhisattva or Sinhak(新學)Bodhisattva as wisdom of true-form, and bases it on the worldly truth. In the meanwhile, Seungjo sees that under 6th-stage-of-abiding Bodhisattva have not yet mastered existence·non-existence with sincere hearts, and thus have no means, but can control their minds with three emptinesses (emptiness<空>·no-form<無相>·no-action<無作) and thus have wise acts. However, 7th-stage-of-abiding or higher-rankingBodhisattva are all equipped with the acts of means and wise acts, and thus can reach the realm of Nirvana, because their mind-wisdom istranquil, allowing them to accumulate virtues in an inactive state of mind, namely, due to the acts of no-form(無相)
