본회퍼, 평화주의자인가 암살자인가?

국문 초록

이 논문은 디트리히 본회퍼가 보여준 평화주의자와 암살자라는 모순 된 이미지의 긴장을 “진정한 삶으로 실천한 신학”의 결과라고 정의하고자한다. 이를 위해 위르겐 몰트만(Jürgen Moltmann)과 매튜 D. 커크패트릭(Matthew D. Kirkpatrick)의 주장을 분석하면서 본회퍼의 평화 사상과 그 실천의 양태를 재구성한다. 몰트만은 본회퍼가 평화를 주장하면서 히틀러 암살작전에 가담하게 된 것이 대리행위와 책임과 저항권이라는 신학적 담론에 따른 결정이라고 주장했다. 반면, 커크패트릭은 본회퍼의 모순되는 면모가 평화를 위한 하나님의 뜻을 추구하려는 그의 일관된 신념과 상황의 조응이 빚어낸 긴장 때문이라고 주장한다. 이러한 두 학자의 주장에 기반하여 본고는 본회퍼가 “지금 바로 여기서” 평화를 말씀하시는 하나님의 음성에 충실하려고 노력하는 과정에 저항을 결단했다고 추정한다. 그의 신학은 고난당한 자와 함께 하신 하나님을 따라서 고난 받는 이웃의 고통을 실체적으로 함께 나누는 행위를 담보하기 때문에 현재 나치에 의해 고통 받는 자들을 위해 저항을 결단하고 결행하는 결과로 이어질 수 밖에 없다. 따라서 그의 저항은 “지금 바로 여기서” 말씀하시는 하나님의 현재성(reality)을 구현한 것이며 평화의 진솔한 실천적 양태의 표현이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Addressing whether he is a pacifist or assassinator, this paper defines Dietrich Bonhoeffer to be a theologian authentically practicing God’s peace. Based on the arguments of Jürgen Moltmann and Matthew D. Kirkpatrick, the paper traces how those two ironical images testify to his pacifism and its practices. Moltmann argues that his complicity in assassinating Hitler results from his determination encouraged by the theological discourse of vicarious representative action, answerability for the other, and the right of resistance. Kirkpatrick, on the other hand, emphasizes that his ironical images reflect the tension between his belief in God’s peace and current political situations. Under the tension Bonhoeffer decided to get involved in the assassination while trying to practice what God says about peace “here and right now.” Practicing theological discourses or seeking for what God says “here and right now,” he importantly states that Christians should take up neighbor’s sufferings as the crucified God does. And he decides to share sufferings of his fellow oppressed people by risking his life in resisting the Nazi regime. Accordingly, his resistance is not giving up God’s peace, but both the realization of God’s reality, i.e., what God says “here and right now,” and the expression of authentic practice of God’s peace.
