고구려 와당의 형태별 전개과정과 지역적 특성

국문 초록

고구려 와당은 문양의 형태에 따라 권운문 와당, 연화문 와당, 복합문 와당, 인동문 와당, 귀면문 와당 그리고 기타 와당 등 6가지 형태로 대분류될 수 있으며, 그 전개과정은 평양 천도 이전부터 국내성과 평양지역에 따라 각기 다르게 진행되고 있었다. 그중에서 권운문 와당, 인동문 와당, 귀면문 와당은 각각 단일한 하나의 형태였던 것에 비하여 연화문 와당은 구획선 연화문 와당, 구획선 없는 연화문 와당, 연판문 와당, 선각형 연화문 와당 등 4가지 형태로, 복합문 와당은 연화복합문 와당, 인동복합문 와당, 상하복합문 와당 등 3가지 형태로 세분될 수 있었다. 고구려 와당은 4세기 대 국내성지역을 중심으로 독창적인 권운문 와당과 구획선 연화문 와당의 형태로 출현한 이후, 점차 주변지역으로 확산되고 있었다. 그렇지만 평양지역에서는 새롭게 유입되는 권운문 와당을 전혀 수용하지 않고 있었을 뿐만 아니라 구획선 연화문 와당의 경우에도 평양지역의 造瓦 전통을 결합시킨 4구획 연화문 와당의 형태로 수용하고 있었다. 그런 점에서 평양 천도 이전의 평양지역은 국내성지역에 비해 비교적 독립적이고 배타적인 성격이 강했던 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그렇지만 평양 천도 이후에는 그 전개 양상이 확연히 달라지고 있었다. 즉, 국내성지역에서는 주변지역에서 새롭게 유입되는 와당을 전혀 수용하지 않은 채, 자기 지역에서 새롭게 출현한 구획선 없는 연화문 와당, 인동문 와당만을 고집할 정도로 배타적인 모습을 보여주고 있었다. 이에 비해 평양지역에서는 국내성지역을 포함한 주변지역의 모든 와당들을 적극 수용하고 있었을 뿐만 아니라 기존의 와당들을 상호 융합시켜 새로운 형태의 와당을 만들어 내고 있었다. 이러한 사실은 평양 천도 이후 국내성지역이 주변지역의 외래적인 와당을 수용하지 않았을 정도로 배타성이 강했던 반면에 평양지역은 주변의 모든 문화를 적극 수용할 만큼 개방적이고 다원적이었다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 그런 점에서 볼 때, 고구려 와당은 출현 당시부터 국내성과 평양지역이라는 이원적 지역 구도를 형성하면서 고구려 후기까지 지속되었던 것으로 파악되었다.

영문 초록

Roof-end tiles in Koguryo can be classified as 6 categories : rolling cloud design, lotus flower design, composite designs, honeysuckle design, monster-mask design, and the rest. The development process of these roof-end tiles in Pyungyang and Guknaeseong area were different even before the capital transfer to Pyungyang. The mode of three roof-end tiles like rolling cloud design, honeysuckle design and monster-mask design was only one. But roof-end tiles with lotus flower design can be divided 4 modes : roof-end tiles with dividing line, non-dividing line, lotus petal design and boat type. The roof-end tile with composite design can be divided 3 modes: composite lotus design, composite honeysuckle design, composite up-and-down design. As the inventive rolling cloud design roof-end tiles and roof-end tiles with diving line appeared in Guknaeseong area in 4th century in Koguryo, they were being spreaded surrounding areas. But roof-end tiles with rolling cloud design was not accepted in Pyungang area. Furthermore roof-end tiles with diving line was accepted as 4 dividing lines type connected with the production method in Pyungang area. So we can conclude that Pyungyang area was more independent and exclusive than Guknaeseong area before the capital transfer to Pyungyang. But after the capital transfer to Pyungyang the development process changed definitely. In Guknaeseong area, new trends introduced from surrounding areas were never accepted. They persisted lotus roof-end tiles with non-dividing line and honeysuckle design that were originally appeared in their region. But in Pyungyang area they actively accepted all of the modes from surrounding areas include Guknaeseong and made new modes through blending these different types. From the fact we can conclude that Guknaeseong had a closed nature even they did not accept outside culture, Pyungyang had openness and pluralism to accept outside culture. After all the dualistic development process of the roof-end tiles in Koguryo that based on the two region Guknaeseong and Pyungyang and that started from the appearance of roof-end tiles continued until the end of Koguryo Dynasty.
