국문 초록

1962년에 결성된 이래 반세기 넘게 활동하며 최장수 록그룹으로 인정받고 있는 롤링스톤즈는 ‘브리티쉬 인베이전’이란 문화사적으로 기념비적 사건의 주역으로 널리 알려져 있다. 정통 블루스를 고수했던 롤링스톤즈는 단순히 사운드를 모방하는 것뿐만 아니라 흑인노예 역사의 특수한 경험이 깃든 블루스 전통과 사회문화적 가치를 백인청년들에게 수혈하여 블루스의 대중화를 선도하였다. 블루스는 복종과 저항의 경계선상에 있던 흑인노예들이 그들의 시련과 고뇌를 정신적으로 승화시킨 예술적 표현이었다. 그런데 이 그룹은 블루스 곡들의 소재와 서사전략, 언어들을 기성세대의 가치관을 거부하며 억압과 소외의 감정을 느끼는 백인청년들의 관점으로 재해석하였다. 이를 통해 그들은 젊은 대중들의 감정적 동일시를 이끌어 내며 1960년대를 휩쓸었던 청년문화의 촉매제가 되었다. 이에 본 연구는 롤링스톤즈의 60년대 대표곡들을 통해 아프리카계 미국 흑인문화의 원형인 블루스가 당대의 백인 청년들에게 어떤 사회문화적 맥락으로 수용되었는지를 살펴봄으로써 대중의 창조적 에너지가 창출하는 대중문화의 다양한 가능성을 조명해보고자 한다.

영문 초록

“The British Invasion,” a cultural phenomenon that struck the US in the 1960s, triggered the blues revival and helped white youth to re-evaluate African-American music during a racially discriminatory period. The Rolling Stones was a central force for this cultural wave. With a comprehensive understanding of the cultural background of the music genre, the group was devoted not only to imitating the blues sound but also to reinterpreting its cultural value as a ‘rebellion’ against the dominant white society of both UK and US. The transfusion of blues attitudes into white youth gave rise to an influential impact on society. Many Anglo-American youngsters regarded the blues theme and argots in the songs of Rolling Stones as an explicit expression of refusal of traditional values, which ultimately contributed to igniting the youth movement at that time. In this context, this paper aims to explore how the Rolling Stones approached and repackaged the blues out of a social context, by analysizing the lyrics and themes of the songs released in the 1960s. In so doing, this paper seeks to illustrate that the transatlantic blues, initiated by intellectually curious white British youth, is a significant example of popular music truly reflecting society, fueled by the genuine potential of the consumer public.
