근·현대지도를 통해 본 大田의 지역 변화와 도시 정체성

국문 초록

본고는 1900년대 초부터 확인되는 대전 관련 근·현대지도를 중심으로 근대도시 대전의 형성 및 변천 과정을 살펴보았다. 1900년 초 경부선 대전역 개통과 더불어 대전천 부근의 일부 동리 수준에서 시작하여 현재의 광역도시체계를 형성하기까지 100년 남짓한 시간 동안의 대전의 도시역사는 ‘근대도시’를 대전의 도시정체성으로 구성하기에 충분한 특징적인 도시 파노라마를 보여준다. 본 연구와 같이 현재적 입장에서 다양한 시간단면 상의지도 재현물을 통해 지역의 특성을 파악하고자 하는 역사지리적 접근은 공간과 시간이 통합된 지역연구이자 지역역사지리 구성의 한 방편이라고 할 수 있다. 향후 고지도나 근·현대지도 같은 지리적 재현물 뿐만이 아닌 지리지·지명·물질적 경관이나 장소·행정구역·풍수 등 다양한 지역 관련 물질적·언표적 요소를 통해 보다 미시적 수준에서 지역의 역동적이고 차이나는 지역역사지리의 구성을 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

This study tried to explore the formation and historical change of Daejeon as a modern city through the historical geography of modern maps which have been made after 1900s. Daejeon has experienced the drastic regional changes from the traditional rural villages to the current metropolitan city after the beginning of modern city in front of Daejeon station of the Gyeongbu railroad in the early 20th century. With regard to this urban history of Daejeon, it is so sufficient to suppose the urban identity of Daejeon as a discriminative modern city. We can easily identify this kind of visible and formal characteristics of Daejeon by simple seeing behavior of several modern maps. The approach of this study could be specified as a sort of regional historical geography which examines and considers together the spatial(space) and temporal(time) factors constructing the regional characteristics from the current situation. I expect regional researchers and geographers to try the construction of many regional historical geographies of rural villages and cities in Korea through various regional elements and data like the regional geographies, place names, landscapes and places, fengshui, administrative districts, old and modern maps, etc.
