진도 들노래의 음악적 변화와 지향

국문 초록

이 글에서는 진도 지역 들노래의 전승과 음악적 특성에 대한 이해를 위해 두 가지 접근을 시도하였다. 하나는 진도에 전승되고 있는 일반적인 들노래와 국가지정 무형문화재 들노래를 비교하여 상관관계를 살펴보는 것이며, 또 다른 하나는 들노래가 시간의 흐름에 따라 어떤 변화를 겪고 있는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 통해 진도의 들노래가 어떤 음악적 지향을 갖고 어떻게 변화되었는지 알아보고, 앞으로 보다 건강한 전승을 위해 어떤 노력이 필요할 것인지 진단해 보았다. 우선 진도 들노래에 나타난 음악적 변화는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 진도 들노래는 지역별·장르별 접변을 통해 외연을 확장해 왔다. 기존의 들노래 이외에도 사당패소리와 가마꾼의 소리, 판소리 등을 수용함으로써 음악적 다양성을 구축했다. 둘째, 기존 악곡들을 수정하여 새로운 악곡으로 재생산하였다. 여기에 사용된 방법은 박자 구조의 정형화, 음역의 확대 및 시김새의 추가 등을 들 수 있다. 셋째, 전통을 기반으로 하는 개작과 창작을 통해 들노래를 세분화하여 악곡구성을 탄탄히 하였다. 대체로 4-5곡에 불과하였을 것으로 짐작되는 진도 들노래는 현재 8곡으로 확대되어 있다. 넷째, 새로운 들노래의 창작에 박병천을 위시한 천재적인 음악인들의 활약이 있었다는 점도 주목할 만하다. 하지만 부정적 변화도 있다. 예를 들어 가사와 선율 등이 고착화된 점, 지정된 악곡 중심으로만 전승되는 점, 일(논농사)과 관계없이 전승되는 점, 소리꾼과 반주자, 그리고 일하는 사람들이 모두 분리되어 소리꾼은 마이크 앞에서 노래하고 소리를 받는 사람들은 노래하지 않는 현상들은 부정적 변화라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 들노래의 변화는 기층음악이었던 민요가 공연 음악화되는 데에 그 지향점을 두고 있는 듯하다. 이러한 상황에서 가장 심각하게 고려해야 할 것은 진도 들노래의 미래이다. 앞으로도 계속해서 들노래의 건강한 전승환경을 보장하기 위해, 변화하는 세상과 시대에 적응해 나가기 위해 우리는 기층음악과 그 향유층을 다시 살려야 한다. 전통의 왕성한 전승력은 향유층의 존재와 기층음악의 기반에서 비롯되기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This article made two attempts to facilitate understanding about the transmission of rice farming songs in Jindo region and their musical characteristics. One is to examine the correlation between the general rice farming songs, transmitted in Jindo, and rice farming songs, designated as intangible cultural assets by the country. The other is to examine what changes rice farming songs has come through in the course of time. Through these processes, we learned how rice farming songs in Jindo has changed with musical orientation, and what is needed for a healthier transmission. The following are the muscial changes in Jindo rice farming songs. First, Jindo rice farming songs has expanded through regional and genre assimilation. Accepting Sadangpaesori, palankeen bearer s song, Pansori, etc, it established musical variety. Secondly, through modifying the existing songs, rice farming songs reproduced new songs. The methods used in the work are the standardization of the beat system, expansion of register, and addition of decorative sounds. Thirdly, through the adaption on the foundation of tradition and creation, rice farming songs was subdivided and its organization became solid. Jindo rice farming songs, for which there would have been only 4-5 songs, now has 8 songs. Lastly, it is very notable that there were genius musicians such as Park, Byung Cheon working in the creation of new rice farming songs. However, there were negative changes as well. For example, the lyric and melody have become permanently set; only designated songs are being transmitted; songs are transmitted quite regardless of the work(rice farming); and the fact that singers, accompanist, and the workers have been divided, and only the singers are singing at the microphone and the people who are receiving the song are now singing. These are the negative changes. These changes seem to have been made because of folk songs, which were once the popular songs, are now aiming to become performing songs. Among the current situation, it is the future of Jindo rice farming songs that deserves the most consideration. In order to secure the healthy transmission environment for rice farming songs and to adapt to the fast-changing world, we should revive the popular songs and their enjoyers. The robust transmission of tradition is oriented from the existence of its lovers and the foundation of popular songs.
