보은 상장리 출토 토제 장구의 제작 시기 재검토

국문 초록

2004년도 보은 상장리 유적에서 토제장구가 출토되었고 이는 고려시대의 유물로 추정되었다. 그러나 조선시대의 유물과 악기학적 특징이 매우 흡사하여 어떠한 경위로 인하여 고려시대로 편년(編年)되었는지 재검토가 요구된다. 본 연구는 이러한 의구심으로부터 시작되었으며 기존연구검토와 고려시대와 조선시대 도·토제 장구를 비교를 통해 악기학적 관점에서 보은 상장리 토제장구의 제작시기를 재검토하였다. 첫째, 가마와 유구와의 관계만으로 상장리 토제장구를 고려시대의 유물이라 규정할만한 명확한 근거는 없으며 오히려 함께 출토된 분청사기, 백자 등으로 미루어 조선시대로 제작년도를 늦춰 볼 수 있는 여지가 충분하다. 둘째, 고려시대 도제장구는 긴 조롱목을 지닌 형태를 지니고 있으며 모두 도자기로 제작되었다. 울림통을 따로 붙이지 않고 하나의 틀로 제작되었으며 고려를 대표하는 다양한 상감기법과 비색, 문양 등을 사용하였다. 보은 상장리 토제장구는 이러한 고려시대 도제장구의 특징이 전혀 나타나지 않는다. 셋째, 보은 상장리 토제장구는 전체적인 크기와 형태, 토제라는 재질, 문살무늬, 특히 조롱목에 사용된 돋을띠의 장식이 전주 삼산리 토제장구를 비롯한 조선시대 토제장구와 동일하다. 또한 고려시대 도제장구와는 달리 조선시대 토제장구는 울림통을 따로 만들어 붙인 점과 집자리에서 발견되어 실생활에 사용되었을 가능성을 제시한다는 점도 특징 중 하나이다. 무엇보다도 조롱목 이음새를 단단하게 하면서도 장식 효과를 내는 돋을띠가 조선시대에 유행하던 제작방법이라는 점에서 보은 상장리 토제장구는 전주 삼산리 토제장구, 고창 용산리 토제장구와 동일한 조선시대 배경을 지니고 있을 것으로 유추하게 해준다. 본 연구의 결과 보은 상장리 토제장구는 고려시대 보다 조선시대 특징이 농후하다. 보다 다양한 방법론적 접근을 통해 상장리 토제장구의 역사적 가치 및 한국 악기 연구에 도움이 되었으면 한다.

영문 초록

In 2004 a Clay-Janggu was excavated from the historic site of Boeun Sangjang-ri. In general it was estimated to be the remains of the Goryeo Dynasty. In view of the instrument itself, however it reveals the similarities rather with the relics of the Joseon Dynasty. So the necessity has emerged, the basis of such estimation of production time to review. This study began with these needs and doubts. For this purpose firstly the previous studies was reviewed, and by comparing of Clay-Janggus of Goryeo and Joseon the production time of Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu was reviewed from the point of the instrument itself. First, based only on the relationship between the kiln and the historic site Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu was until now considered as a relics of the Goryeo Dynasty. But such argument is not reliable nor acceptable. Rather by comparison with grayish-blue-powdered celadon and white porcelain which were co-excavated with Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu, it is reasonable to argue that Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu was made in the Joseon Dynasty. Second, Goryeo s Clay-Janggu has a long jorongmok and as known was made of only ceramic. Soundbox was made in a single framework. And various techniques such as lnlay, celadon green and patterns have been used, which represent the Goryeo Dynasty. But these characteristics of the Goryeo Dynasty does not appear at all in Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu. Third, Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu has very similar size, shape, material and pattern with the Janggu of the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, dodulti (embossed band) of Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu was typical production techniques of the Joseon Dynasty. And soundbox was also made separately and attached as like the Joseon Dynasty. Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu was excavated not in the famous and official kiln site but in normal residence. And these facts suggest possibility that this instrument may have been used in everyday life. The results of this study shows that Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu has rather many characteristics of Joseon Dynasty than Goryeo Dynasty. I also hope that in the future thanks to more excavations of remains and more thorough researches, historical value of Boeun Sangjang-ri Clay-Janggu could be accurately clarified.
