음악가 심정순의 공연활동 재검토

국문 초록

본 연구는 1900년대 초반의 판소리 명창이자 가야금 독주와 병창으로 다양한 활동을 펼쳤던 음악가의 생애 중 공연활동을 재검토한 논문이다. 그동안 심정순에 대해서는 약 15건 내외의 신문기사와 음반자료, 창본, 인터뷰자료를 근거로 충청권 중고제 음악문화의 전승자로서, 고제(古制)의 음악전통을 보유한 판소리 명창이자 가야금음악가로 평가해왔다. 그러나 이는 주로 1913년, 1914년, 1920년의 한정된 자료에 의한 것이어서 공연내용 및 레퍼토리 등을 상세히 알 수 없었다. 이에 본 논문에서는 32건의 관련자료를 추가로 조사하고, 이를 연도별, 내용별로 분류하여 심정순이 펼쳤던 공연 활동을 재구성하고 기존의 연구에서 간과되었거나 재평가되어야 할 부분이 무엇인지를 살펴본 결과 다음과 같이 재정리 할 수 있었다. 심정순은 1912년부터 1914년까지 장안사 소속 음악가로서 서울과 지방에서 관객과 언론의 관심을 받으며 전성기를 누렸다. 이 기간 동안 서울 보다는 인천, 황해도, 평안남·북도에서 장기간 순회공연 하였다. 1915년, 서울에서는 경성구파배우조합이 설립되어 새로운 공연의 흐름이 조성되었으나, 심정순은 이 대열에 합류하지 않고 지속적으로 지방공연을 수행했다. 이후 1919년부터 서울무대에 돌아와 문락좌의 전속음악가로 활동하다가, 문락좌가 문을 닫은 후로는 주요 공연과 음반취입 등에 초청받으며 음악활동을 하였다. 한편, 본고에서는 심정순의 활동이 실연자로서의 측면과 지방 활동을 이끈 공연단리더로서의 역할이 구분되는 점에 착안하여 레퍼토리와 활동내용에 주목하였다. 실연자로서의 심정순은 주로 가야금연주와 병창으로 활동하였고, 신문기사에 소개된 그의 공연레퍼토리 중 판소리는 단 한곡도 확인되지 않았다. 또한, 지방순회공연단을 이끈 총감독의 측면에서 조명해 보았다. 심정순은 연극개량 의 취지를 살린 신연극 공연 및 구연극의 개량과 변화에 대해 관심을 가지고 무대 위에서 이를 실천하고자 노력하였음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서, 기존의 연구에서처럼 심정순이 중고제 음악문화의 전승자로서, 변화하지 않은 고제(古制)의 음악전통을 보유하였다는 점이 높이 평가되어야 마땅하지만, 본고의 공연활동 분석을 통해 확인된 가야금 음악가로서의 면모와 새로운 공연양식을 시도한 공연단 총감독으로서의 역량 또한 간과될 수 없다고 본다. 즉, 심정순은 공연무대에서는 가야금 음악가로서 독주와 병창을 주로 하였고, 공연단 리더로서는 시대에 걸맞는 새로운 공연양식을 정착시키고자 노력한 음악가였다.

영문 초록

For this paper, not only those 15 articles from the Maeil Shinbo that are related to Sim Jeongsun and already widely well-known in the Korean musicologists academic world but also 32 more articles were carefully examined. I also checked up various activities of people around Sim at that time. Based on these investigations, I reconstructed Sim s career as a musician from 1911 to 1926. Through this research, I was able to re-illuminate the significance of his musical activities of the time. Based on those newly added 32 articles, I found that Sim started his musical activity from 1912 as a member of the Jangansa theater. He was one of the best well-known musicians not only in Seoul but also in other areas of Korea until 1918. However, his performance venues were not included in the main area of the foremost musicians in Seoul. Because he did not join the newly formed musician s union(Geyongseong Kupa-Baeu-johap), he was unable to performance at rearly venues in Seoul between 1915 and 1919 during this time. He performed outside Seoul, he still enjoy popularity but did not received from the press. He came to Seoul again in 1919 and performed there until 1926. In these years, he was mentioned among the great singers of the time such as Yi Dongbaek and Kim Changryong. He was also mentioned as a legendary gayageum player. However, not many articles about his activities after 1915 can be found. Up to now, many scholars have evaluated Sim Jeongsun as a great pansori singer and, at the same time, as a gayageum player and gayageum byeongchang performer. However, in my opinion he seemed to be have been more famous for a gayageum musician rather than a pansori singer through his career. In addition to this, he worked as a concert director and as a leader of a group. From 1912 Sim Jeongsun staged New Play and some programs from related to new novels in local venues. It is not easy to grasp performance forms or musical styles of his plays. However, it is certain that Sim was interested in the improving on old style plays and took a leading role in this development. Although his importance as a transmitter of Junggoje pansori style has been well recognize on the basis of his sons text and recordings. It should not be passed over that he tried to explore new directions in Korean traditional Music.
