The purpose of this study was to discuss art expression activities based on Howard Gardner s newly highlighted multiple intelligences theory and to develop an art program by applying the theory. It s basically meant to seek ways of providing efficient art instruction. How to teach children to represent natural things in art by taking a scientific approach was considered so that they could understand it easily, and an art program whose theme was water was developed by applying a scientific approach to improve the mutually interrelated logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence and naturalist intelligence of learners and their learning efficiency. Three research questions were posed: 1. Does an art education program that is based on the multiple intelligences theory and covers the theme of water have any significant effect on spatial intelligence? 2. Does an art education program that is based on the multiple intelligences theory and covers the theme of natural things have any significant effect on naturalist intelligence? 3. Does an art education program based on multiple intelligences have any significant effect on logical-mathematical intelligence in case of conducting it by taking a scientific approach? The subjects in this study were 28 elementary school boys and girls who resided in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province. An experiment was implemented during a 16-week period of time from June through September, 2009, three times a week, by providing an art program based on the multiple intelligences theory to five different groups. A pretest and posttest were carried out by utilizing Moon Yong-rin s MI career test, a Seoul University professor, to look for any significant changes in the multiple intelligences to determine the effect of the program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The art education program that was based on the multiple intelligences theory and covered the theme of water had a very positive impact on bolstering the spacial intelligence of the children. 2. The art education program that was based on the multiple intelligences theory and covered the theme of natural things exerted some influence on fostering the children s naturalist intelligence. 3. The art education program based on the multiple intelligences theory exercised a very positive influence on furthering their logical- mathematical intelligence when it was conducted by a scientific approach. The above-mentioned findings suggested that the art program based on the multiple intelligences theory and with the theme of water had a very positive impact on the spatial perception and logical-mathematical intelligence of the elementary schoolers when they received education by applying the program in order to foster their spatial intelligence, naturalist intelligence and logical-mathematical intelligence, which were part of multiple intelligences, and the pretest and posttest results proved the effects of it. Thus, the art program based on the multiple intelligences theory, which was developed by this researcher, enabled the children to foster their logical thinking faculty and spatial perception when they received education by applying the program, scientific principles and an artistic approach. Therefore the program turned out to be one of effective art guidance methods.
