금관가야 목곽묘 사회의 계층과 특징

국문 초록

묘제 가운데 목곽묘는 여러 연구자들에 의해 오랜 시간 연구되어져 왔다. 목곽묘는 의도적으로 만들어진 행위의 산물로서 사회적인 의미가 투영된 결과물로 해석이 가능하다. 때문에 규모나 부장품등을 지표로 삼아 어느 정도 피장자의 사회적인 위치나 권력을 추정할 수 있을 것으로 생각되며, 이를통해 상대적인 계층분류를 시도하고자 한다. 금관가야 목곽묘를 대상으로 규모와 구조, 부장유물의 조합을 이용하여 계층을 분류하고, 이렇게 나누어진 계층을 통해 역으로 당시의 목곽묘 사회를 검토 하고자 한다. 시기별 분석결과 Ⅰ기는 목곽묘의 출현기로 4계층, Ⅱ기와 Ⅲ기는 각각 발전기와 전성기로 8계층, Ⅳ기 6계층으로 계층이 증가했다가 다시 감소하는 현상이 나타난다. 김해지역에서 이렇게 빠른 계층분화가 나타나는 배경에는 철 생산의 확대로 인한 경제적인 성장과 해로를 통한 대외교역의 활성화에 있는 것으로 생각된다. 금관가야의 목곽묘 사회는 철 생산과 더불어 활발한 대외교역을 통해 정치적, 경제적 기반을 구축하였으며, 동시에 무력적 기반을 갖춘 정치적인 지배층으로 성장한 개방적인 성격의 대성동 집단을 중심축으로 금관가야 목곽묘 사회는 국제무역항을 통해 급속도의 발전을 이루어내고 있는 것이 특징이다

영문 초록

A wooden chamber tomb is one of most studied ancient tombs by a number of researcher. It can be interpreted to ba an object conveying the social meaning as a product of intended actions. Thus it is attempted to classify the social ranks of the society by presuming the deceased’s social status and power, based on an analysis of the grave goods and the size of tomb. In this study, social statuses of wooden chamber tombs are determined by the results of an analysis on the tomb size, architectural structure and grave goods. This paper represents the reconstruction of ancient Geumgwan Gaya society based on the newly proposed social rank changes over time. Their temporal changes are as fallows. Phase I is marked by the appearance of wooden chamber tombs and hierarchically four-tiered classes were recognized. Phases Ⅱ and Ⅲ are the stages of the development and the full-fledged wooden chamber tomb culture when social stratification became more sophisticated with eight-tiered classes recognized. Then, in Phase Ⅳ the social ranking system had shrunk with six-tiered classes. What caused the rapid development of the social stratification in Gimhae area was economic growth attributed to the expanded iron production and active maritime trade with foreign countries. The wooden chamber tomb society had established political and financial foundation through the maritime trade as well as large-scale iron production. In particular, the Geumgwan Gaya wooden chamber society with the Daeseongdong group having a great military strength as a regional center, had rapidly evolved.
