By utilizing interindustry flows, the model in this paper is capable of providing useful suggestions for solving several problems with central place theory. First, higher-order places can export their goods to lower-order places and lower-order places also can export their goods to higher-order places. Just because higher-order place produce all goods that lower places do, does no mean they can maintain self-suffciency for those goods. They still could import some amount from other places. Generally, higher-order places export higher-order goods and import lower-order goods. Furthermore, even if a place does not achieve self-sufficiency in some good, it could export that good. Or if a place produces some good more than needed for self-sufficiency, it could import some of that good. Balance of trade beween hierarchical levels according to this model can be established by direct mutual interlevel trade, rather than by indirect trade via the rural sector. Second, the model can generate economic-base ratios. Although not fully developed, the nonbasic ratio calculated from the illustration increases with city size. Nonetheless, lower-order places could have a higher nonbasic ratio than higher-order places if trading patterns were different in the two places. The non-basic ratio for each place is a function of the trade coefficient, threshold factor, nesting factor, the hierarchical order in the system, and geographical location of a place within the system. Also, the relative location within the central-place system has a great influence an the growth of cities. The new appearance of a higher-order place into the system changes the relative size of exiting cities and requires a new growth pattern of cities. Cities in the same order grow more rapidly the nearer they are higher-order cities. The difference in size between the cities that belonged originally to the same level will become greater as the number of hierarchical levels in the system increases. The growth pattern that would be generated would correspond to the continuous urban hierarchy. The continuous sizing of cities is due to their relative location, not to unspecified randomness. This model provides a theoretical framework in which input-output analysis and gravity models could be combined with the framework of central place theory.
