토마스 머튼과 최근 신비주의의 동향

국문 초록

동양의 명상이라는 주제가 서구 사회에서 인기를 끌고 있다. 특히 명상 산업은 신비주의라는 탈을 쓰고 특별히 명상의 붐을 주도하고 있다. 신비주의는 일반 사회에서 종종 부적절하게 오용되어 왔으며 특별히 종교적인 맥락에서도 그런 경우가 왕왕 있었다. 현대 그리스도인들은 심원하고 진정한 영성을 경험하고자 하는 간절한 염원을 갖고 있다. 그러나 많은 그리스도인들이 기존의 기도나 신심 생활에 만족하지 못한 채, 종교적 체험을 할 수 있는 영성을 탐색하기 위한 대체물을 찾고 있다. 이 시대 가장 영향력 있는 신비가이자 사상가 중의 하나인 토마스 머튼은 동서양 종교의 가교역할을 하는 데 열성적이었다. 머튼의 수행 여정을 분석해 보면 침묵과 고독 속에서 관상과 신비주의에 대한 다양한 언급들을 접할 수 있다. 신비주의는 머튼이 생각한 그리스도교와 타 종교 특히 선불교와의 사이에 공통분모가 있는 것처럼 보인다. 일상생활 안에 관상과 신비주의를 끌어오고 영성을 민주화한 것은 머튼의 주요 업적이다. 세계화로 인해 다종교 사회로 빠르게 진입해 가고 있는 현시점에 머튼이 제시한 종교 간 대화는 가톨릭과 타 종교 사이의 보다 나은관계 개선을 위한 필수적인 단계이다. 종교학적 관점에서 보면 모든 종교들은 상호 조우를 통해 긴장을 유발시키지만 오히려 이런 긴장이 때로는 종교 사상 발전의 새로운 계기가 되기도 한다. 인간의 가장 내밀한 경험 부분을 다루는 신비 체험에 대한 현상학적인 분석은 많은 문제를 야기하지만 이 글은 어떤 관점에 기반을 둔 이론적 지식을 분석하는 것이 아니라 신비가들의 직관적인 경험을 분석하기 때문에 현상학적인 접근을 할 수밖에 없다. 필자는 이 글에서 최근 신비주의의 주요 동향 중의 하나인 동양의 선이 어떻게 그리스도교의 관상과 매개될 수 있는지를 통찰하고 탐색해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Asian meditation has attracted much attention in Western society and the business of meditation is witnessing a boom especially meditation in the guise of mysticism. Mysticism is often misunderstood and/or is improperly applied in society, particularly in a religious context. Contemporary Christians have a keen desire to experience a deep and authentic spiritual life. However, many Christians discontent with the old ways of prayer and devotion are looking to alternative forms of exploring their spirituality and experiencing a fulfilling religious lifestyle. Thomas Merton, thought to be one of the most influential Roman Catholic mystics and thinkers of this generation, was a stanch proponent of bridging the religions of the East with the West. In closely examining Merton’s monastic journey, there is a prevalent reference to mysticism and contemplation through solitude and silence. Mysticism is seen as the common denominator between Merton’s brand of Christianity and other religions, in particular Zen Buddhism. Merton’s major contribution is thought to be the democratization of spirituality, introducing mysticism and contemplation in the context of everyday life. The movement towards globalization and increased prevalence of multi-religious societies in modern times necessitates inter-religious dialogue, such as that proposed by Merton, as a critical step toward bettering relations between Catholicism and other religions. From a religious studies perspective, encounters with all forms of religion leads to tension, which at times provides an opportunity for the development of novel religious thought. Although the phenomenological analysis of mystical experiences, the innermost human experiences, do present a number of analytical problems, I feel that adopting a phenomenological approach is necessary because mystic intuitive experiences can best be approached phenomenological, and not from an theoretical knowledge based perspective. This article will explore the insights of how to combine Zen meditation with Christian contemplation as one of the major trends of current mysticism.
